Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is a journey to the Shangri-La beyond the Annapurna Himalayas. The trek starting point Kagbeni is reached with a short 25-min flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, followed by a 6 hour road drive. The road passes along the Kali Gandaki river between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayas. The heart of the remote Himalayan destination is Lo-Manthang in Mustang. Instead of returning the same trail, on this trek you will trek back to Muktinath via the eastern side of Kali Gandaki river.

It is known for its dry mountain landscapes, Tibetan villages, Buddhist culture, caves, monasteries, and dramatic cliffs. The trek begins at Kagbeni and follows the main Upper Mustang trail through Chele, Geling, Charang, and Lo Manthang, with views of the unique Trans Himalayan landscape.

This 16 day Upper Mustang Trek is slightly different from the classical route because the return journey goes through Yara, Tangya, Tetang, and finally to Muktinath, on the eastern side of the Kali Gandaki River, instead of retracing the same trail. This trek suits travelers who want authentic trekking experience and a high altitude desert landscape rather than the forested and glacial scenery of Nepal's more classic trekking regions.

Upper Mustang Trek Highlights

  • Lo Manthang and Its Ancient Heritage: Lo Manthang is the cultural heart of Upper Mustang and one of the most memorable places on the trek. Its old mud walls, traditional houses, royal palace area, and ancient monasteries show the unique history and Tibetan Buddhist heritage of the former Kingdom of Lo.

  • An Off the Beaten Return Route: Instead of retracing the classical trail, this trek returns east of the Kali Gandaki River through Yara, Tangya, and Tetang. This quieter route offers a more authentic experience and uses foot trails whenever possible, avoiding much of the road affected classical route.

  • Dramatic Trans Himalayan Landscape: The trail passes through a spectacular dry landscape of red cliffs, deep valleys, rocky hills, caves, and barren mountains. The unusual colors and formations create a completely different Himalayan experience from the green forests and snow covered landscapes found on many other trekking routes in Nepal.

  • Ancient Cave Monastery of Luri Gompa: From Yara, the route continues to Luri Gompa, an ancient Buddhist cave monastery built into a high cliff. Its remote location, old cave shrines, and peaceful mountain setting make it one of the most special cultural sites in Upper Mustang.

  • Charang Village and Its Fortress: Charang is a historic Mustang village known for its old fortress, red monastery, and traditional whitewashed houses overlooking the Charang Chu valley. Nearby Lo Gekar Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Mustang, adds to the cultural importance of the area.

  • Muktinath Temple: The trek finishes at Muktinath Temple, a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists surrounded by the rugged landscapes of Mustang. Visiting this important site after trekking through the remote valleys of Upper Mustang provides a meaningful end to the journey before continuing toward Pokhara.

  • Tibetan Buddhist Culture: The trek passes through Chele, Geling, Charang, Lo Manthang, Yara, Ghara, and Tangya, where traditional mud houses, ancient monasteries, prayer flags, and Buddhist practices remain part of daily life. These remote villages offer a close look at the Tibetan influenced unique culture and traditions of Upper Mustang.

                                  Know Before You Book

                                  • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Since this is a 16 day trip, we recommend applying for a 30 day tourist visa, which costs USD 50, to give yourself a comfortable buffer around your travel dates. You can fill out the online arrival form in advance athttps://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/

                                  • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                                  • Fitness Level: This trek spends many days above 3,000 m, with several long trekking days on the return route through Tangya and Tetang. Trekkers should be in good physical condition, though prior high altitude experience is not strictly required.

                                  • Area Permits: This trek requires two permits. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit costs NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals. The Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit is charged at USD 50 per person per day for each day spent inside the restricted area. This itinerary spends 10 permit days inside the Upper Mustang restricted area, from Day 4 through Day 13, making the permit cost USD 500 per person. Both permits must be arranged through our registered company, and a licensed guide is mandatory in the restricted area.

                                  • Flight Reliability: Flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as any mountain flights, can occasionally be delayed due to weather. We recommend building a small buffer into your travel plans where possible.

                                  • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude evacuation, and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek.

                                  • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP, though it is a good idea to carry some Nepali Rupees for smaller personal expenses on the trail.

                                  Accommodations, Meals, and Transportation

                                  Seasonal and Weather Updates

                                  • Spring, March to May: A popular season for Upper Mustang, with generally stable weather and clear views, and blooming conditions at lower elevation around Pokhara and Kagbeni.

                                  • Autumn, September to November: Another favored season, with clear skies and stable weather, though nights at higher altitude around Lo Manthang and Yara are cold.

                                  • Summer, June to August: Because Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the region receives far less monsoon rainfall than most of Nepal, making it one of the few areas that remains trekkable through the summer months.

                                  Health and Safety

                                  • General Wellbeing: This trek spends many consecutive days above 3,000 m, reaching a maximum of 3,900 m near Luri Gompa. Trekkers should be aware of the signs of altitude sickness and communicate any symptoms to their guide promptly.

                                  • Healthcare Facilities: Basic health posts are available in some of the larger villages along the route, and full hospital facilities are available in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Your guide can assist with local arrangements if required.

                                  • Hydration: Drink sufficient fluids throughout the trekking days, especially given the dry, windy conditions typical of the Mustang region.

                                  • Weather Awareness: Afternoon winds are common across the Mustang plateau, so most trekking days are planned with an early start to avoid the strongest winds later in the day.

                                  Trip Preparations
                                  • How is this Upper Mustang Trek different from the classical route?

This trek follows the main route from Kagbeni to Chele, Geling, Charang, and Lo Manthang, then takes an eastern return route through Yara, Luri Gompa, Tangya, and Tetang instead of returning by the same trail. This gives you a different trekking experience through more remote villages and landscapes.

                                  • The main highlights include Yara village, Luri Gompa, Puyung Khola, Tangya, Paha Pass, and Tetang. This section is more remote and has fewer facilities than the main Upper Mustang route.

                                  • During the rest day in Lo Manthang, you can explore the Royal Palace, Jampa Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, and Chode Gompa. You can also take an excursion to Chhoser to see its ancient cave dwellings and nearby monasteries.

                                  • Luri Gompa is a historic cave monastery located near Yara. On Day 10, you trek from Yara to Luri Gompa and return to Yara, making it a dedicated side trip without changing your overnight location.

                                  • Yes. Upper Mustang is a restricted trekking area. You need a Restricted Area Permit and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. The required permits are arranged in advance through an authorized trekking agency.

                                  • Yes. Independent trekking is not permitted in the Upper Mustang restricted area. You must trek with a licensed guide and follow the regulations for restricted area trekking.

                                  • The Tangya to Tetang section on Day 12 is particularly demanding. It covers about 28 km and takes around 7 to 8 hours, with a long section through remote, dry terrain and a climb toward Paha Pass before descending to Tetang.
