Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal! After you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, immigration usually takes about 30 minutes. Our representative meets you at the airport and drives you to Bhaktapur, about 30 minutes away. Each guest gets an individual arrival transfer based on their flight time.

You check in at your boutique hotel and have free time to rest. If you arrive early in the day, you can explore Bhaktapur Durbar Square at your own pace. Your entry tickets are given to you on arrival.

  • Route: Tribhuvan International Airport to Bhaktapur

  • Altitude: About 1,400 m

  • Accommodation: Boutique hotel, Bhaktapur

  • Meals: None included

  • Highlights: Arrival, free time, Bhaktapur Durbar Square

    Morning: Nagarkot and Changu Narayan

You start early with a 30 minute drive to Nagarkot to watch the sunrise over the Himalayas. Please wear a windbreaker, even in summer, as mornings are windy. You then drive 20 minutes to Changu Narayan Temple.

Changu Narayan is the oldest standing temple in Kathmandu Valley. It holds the oldest readable inscription in the valley, from the 5th century, which tells of King Manadev building the temple. The complex also has ancient stone statues, mainly of Lord Vishnu and his forms. After the visit, you drive 20 minutes back to your hotel for breakfast.

    Late Morning: Bhaktapur Durbar Square

After breakfast you take a walking tour of Bhaktapur, which takes about 3 hours. Bhaktapur is known for Newari life, old architecture, pottery work, and narrow lanes. You see the Golden Gate, the 55 Window Palace, Taleju Temple, a medieval water tap, Shiva temples, the five storey Nyatapola Temple, Pottery Square, and Dattatreya Square. You also stop for coffee at a rooftop restaurant with a view of the old town. The van waits for you at Dattatreya Square.

    Afternoon: Pashupatinath and Boudhanath

You drive about 45 minutes to Pashupatinath Temple, a Hindu temple of Lord Shiva and the most visited temple in Nepal. You see colorful sadhus (holy men) here. On the banks of the Bagmati River, you can see Hindu funeral rituals from across the river. Please be respectful and ask your guide before taking photos. You enter from the southern side, walk through the temple complex, and finish at the northern gate where your van waits.

You then drive 15 minutes to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. A coffee break at a rooftop restaurant gives the best view of the stupa. After the break, you walk clockwise around the stupa, spin the prayer wheels, and visit some Tibetan monasteries.

Finally, you drive to your 4 star hotel in Thamel, the main tourist area of Kathmandu, with many shops and restaurants.

    • Route: Bhaktapur, Nagarkot, Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Thamel

    • Altitude: About 2,175 m at Nagarkot, about 1,400 m elsewhere

    • Accommodation: 4 star hotel, Thamel

    • Meals: Breakfast

    • Highlights: Nagarkot sunrise, Changu Narayan Temple, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa

After breakfast, you leave at 8:30 am for Patan Durbar Square. You start with coffee at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square. You then explore the palace courtyards, the golden water tap inside the palace, the fine art museum, Krishna Temple, and Bhimsen Temple. You also visit the Golden Temple.

You then drive about 45 minutes to Pharping, a Buddhist village that is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists. Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in its caves, and the village is a pilgrimage site. Pharping is also home to a large Guru Rinpoche statue.

Next, you drive 20 minutes to Dakshinkali Temple, a temple of the goddess Kali in the south of the valley. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, many people visit the temple and offer animal sacrifices to the goddess. Your guide will explain what you see.

You then drive about 30 minutes to Kirtipur, one of the main Newari towns in Kathmandu Valley. You visit Bagbhairav Temple and walk through the old town. A rooftop restaurant in Kirtipur is a good lunch stop. In the evening you return to your hotel in Thamel.

After breakfast, you drive 20 minutes to Swayambhunath Stupa, also called the Monkey Temple. You walk about 10 minutes up the hill to the top. The hilltop gives wide views over Kathmandu Valley, and the air is usually clearest in winter. Swayambhunath is an ancient Buddhist site. You visit the main stupa, other temples in the complex, and a monastery where young monks live and study. This visit takes about 1.5 hours. Monkeys live here, so keep your bags closed and do not carry loose food.

You then drive to the Chandragiri bottom station and take the 10 minute cable car ride to the top of Chandragiri Hill. You can see the Himalayas and Kathmandu Valley from the top. After a snack break, you take the cable car down and drive 30 minutes to Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Allow 2 to 3 hours here.

Your day ends with a rickshaw tour of about 30 minutes through the oldest part of Kathmandu, including the old markets of Ason and Indra Chowk. Know Before You Book

              • Visa Requirements: For this 6 day tour you need a 15 day Nepal tourist visa. All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travelers can get one on arrival. The 15 day visa fee is USD 30. You can apply online in advance at https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/ to save time at the airport.

              • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for the visa stamp.

              • Fitness Level: Most days involve easy to moderate walking on city streets, temple steps, and stairs. Day 4 is a full day hike of about 6 hours and 15 km, so good general fitness is needed for that day. Please tell us before booking if you have any health concerns.

              • Dakshinkali on Tuesdays and Saturdays: Animal sacrifices take place at Dakshinkali Temple on these days. Some travelers may find this difficult to see.

              • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP. Carry some Nepali Rupees (NPR) for personal expenses.
