Trip Overview

The Rolwaling Trek with Tashi Lapcha Pass is a 15 day Himalayan adventure through the remote and less visited Rolwaling Valley and Khumbu region. The route follows the Rolwaling Khola through Beding and Na villages, then continues to Tsho Rolpa lake and Trakarding Glacier before crossing Tashi Lapcha Pass at 5,755 m. After the pass, the trail descends through Thame and continues to Namche Bazaar then to Lukla, followed by a flight back to Kathmandu. The trekking is strongly suggested and is suitable for group of experienced trekkers only.

The trek includes glacier travel around Tsho Rolpa and Trakarding Glacier, high altitude sections near Tashi Lapcha Phedi, and camping in remote areas. It is one of the most rewarding routes for trekkers seeking a remote Himalayan adventure. The journey connects the quiet Rolwaling Valley with the famous Khumbu region in one continuous trek.

Why You Will Love This Trip

  • Explore a Remote Himalayan Valley: From the moment you leave Singati Bazar, you are walking through a side of Nepal that most trekkers never see. No crowds, no long lines of lodges, just forest trails and small villages all the way up to Na.

  • Walk Through Changing Mountain Villages: Jagat, Simigaon, Kyalche, Beding, and Na each feel different from the last. You will notice the houses change, the crops change, and slowly the forest gives way to open, high mountain ground right in front of you.

  • Catch a Classic Gaurishankar View: On a clear morning from the ridge above Simigaon, Gaurishankar appears right up the valley. It is one of those views that makes you put your poles down and just look for a while.

  • Stay in a Village of Sherpa Climbers: Beding is where Rolwaling's Sherpa climbers have come from for years. Sit by the monastery, walk past the mani walls, and you will feel how much history this small village holds.

  • Camp Beside Nepal's Largest Glacial Lake: Tsho Rolpa sits at 4,580 m, fed by the Trakarding Glacier and surrounded by the Rolwaling Himal. Waking up beside it is a memory that stays with you.

  • Walk on a Real Glacier: Not many treks in Nepal give you this. Crossing the Trakarding Glacier to reach high camp below the pass is something few trekkers ever experience firsthand.

  • Cross One of Nepal's Toughest Passes: This is the heart of the whole trip. Your guide fixes the ropes, you clip in with your crampons, and you cross Tashi Lapcha Pass at 5,755 m. Look back and you see the Rolwaling Himal one last time. Look ahead and the Khumbu opens up below you.

  • Rest in an Old Sherpa Settlement: Thame is one of the oldest villages in the Khumbu, home to a monastery that hosts the Mani Rimdu festival. After the pass, this quiet, traditional place is exactly where you want to slow down.

  • Finish on a Legendary Trekking Trail: Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital of the Khumbu, then down to Lukla for your flight home. After the remoteness of Rolwaling, walking into Namche feels like arriving somewhere alive.

Itinerary

Your journey begins with an early morning drive out of Kathmandu along the Araniko Highway toward Lamosangu. From there the road turns north into Dolakha district through Charikot, the district headquarters. From Charikot, the road descends along the Tama Koshi valley, passing small villages such as Piguti and Malepu, to Singati Bazar, a small roadhead town where the trek begins. Road conditions past Charikot can vary, so travel time depends on the state of the hill roads.

  • Route: Kathmandu to Singati Bazar by private vehicle, via Charikot

  • Altitude: Around 950 m

  • Accommodation: Mountain Lodge

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Highlights: Drive through Dolakha district, views over the Tama Koshi valley, arrival at the trailhead in Singati Bazar

From Singati Bazar, the trail follows the Tama Koshi and then turns into the Rolwaling Khola valley. You will pass through small riverside villages such as Suri Dhoban and crossing the river on suspension bridges along the way. Jagat is a small town to a mix of ethnic communities along the route.

    • Route: Singati Bazar to Jagat along the Tama Koshi and lower Rolwaling Khola, via Suri Dhoban

    • Altitude: 1,250 m

    • Accommodation: Mountain Lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

    • Highlights: River crossings on suspension bridges, Suri Dhoban and other riverside villages, arrival in Jagat

From Jagat, the trail climbs steadily through forest and terraced hillside, following the Rolwaling Khola upstream for most of the day. Simigaon sits on an open ridge above the valley and is regarded as one of the best viewpoints on the entire trek, with Gaurishankar visible up the valley on a clear morning.

      • Route: Jagat to Simigaon along the Rolwaling Khola

      • Altitude: 2,000 m

      • Accommodation: Mountain Lodge

      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

      • Highlights: Steep forest climb, terraced hillside villages, Gaurishankar viewpoint at the Simigaon ridge

The trail leaves Simigaon and enters rhododendron forest, crossing toward Surmuche before continuing up to Kyalche, a small stop with only one lodge along the route. The path stays close to the Rolwaling Khola gorge for much of the day, with the trail toward Riku village visible across the river.

        • Route: Simigaon to Kyalche through forest along the Rolwaling Khola gorge, via Surmuche

        • Altitude: 2,790 m

        • Highlights: Rhododendron forest, gorge views over the Rolwaling Khola, arrival at the small settlement of Kyalche

The trail continues along the upper Rolwaling Khola, passing through Dongang before climbing into thinning forest with Gaurishankar and Melungtse visible on clear days. Beding is the largest village in the valley and home to generations of Sherpa climbers, set below these two peaks with a monastery and mani walls lining the village path.

          • Route: Kyalche to Beding along the upper Rolwaling Khola, via Dongang

          • Altitude: 3,690 m

          • Highlights: Forest thinning into alpine terrain, views toward Gaurishankar and Melungtse, arrival in Beding

The trail to Na is short but climbs steadily, moving through increasingly open ground as the tree line falls away. Yak pastures line much of the route, and Na sits in a wide part of the valley below Kang Nachugo and Chobutse, used mainly by herders in the warmer months.

            • Route: Beding to Na through yak pastures

            • Altitude: 4,180 m

A full day is spent in Na to let your body adjust before continuing into the higher, more technical section of the route above Tsho Rolpa. A short walks around the village and the surrounding pastures give time to rest while taking in views of Kang Nachugo, Chobutse, and the other peaks above the valley.

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

              • Highlights: Acclimatization, views of Kang Nachugo and Chobutse, time to prepare for the glacier section ahead

The trail climbs above Na into open, rocky terrain, reaching Tsho Rolpa, one of the largest glacial lakes in Nepal, fed by the Trakarding Glacier below Ramdung Peak. This marks the start of the camping section of the trek, since no lodges exist beyond this point until Thame.

                • Route: Na to Tsho Rolpa Lake

                • Altitude: 4,580 m

                • Accommodation: Tented Camp

A shorter day moves camp higher onto the glacier to Tashi Lapcha Phedi, the high camp used as the base for the pass crossing. This day is kept short to help the body adjust before the long crossing that follows.

                    • Route: Trakarding Glacier to Tashi Lapcha Phedi

                    • Altitude: 5,010 m

This is the most demanding day of the trek. The route climbs to Tashi Lapcha Pass at 5,755 m over rock and ice, with fixed ropes set up by the guide team on the steeper sections, before descending onto the Drolambau Glacier toward Pachermo on the Khumbu side. Crampons and a harness are required, and the day typically takes 8 to 10 hours depending on conditions.

The trail descends from Pachermo through the upper Thame valley, with the terrain becoming steadily less technical as the route drops in altitude. Thame is one of the oldest Sherpa settlements in the Khumbu, home to a monastery that hosts the Mani Rimdu festival, with lodges available again from this point onward.

                        • Route: Pachermo to Thame

                        • Altitude: 3,820 m

The trail follows the Bhote Koshi downstream from Thame toward Namche Bazaar, joining the main Everest Base Camp trekking trail. Namche is the largest and busiest village in the Khumbu, with shops, bakeries, and a wide range of services for trekkers.

                          • Route: Thame to Namche Bazaar along the Bhote Koshi River

                          • Altitude: 3,440 m

The trail descends through Sagarmatha National Park, passing through the park entrance at Monjo and the village of Phakding along the Dudh Koshi River, before the final climb up to Lukla. This is the last trekking day of the journey, ending at the airstrip that serves the Everest region.

                            • Route: Namche Bazaar to Lukla via Monjo and Phakding

                            • Altitude: 2,840 m

A short mountain flight carries you from Lukla back to Kathmandu, bringing the trek to an end. Flights out of Lukla depend on weather conditions and can be delayed or rescheduled at short notice, so it is worth building a buffer day into your travel plans.

                              • Route: Lukla to Kathmandu by domestic flight

                              • Altitude: 1,400 m

                                Know Before You Book

                                • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travelers can get a Visa on Arrival. Since this trip runs for 15 days, a 30 day tourist visa gives you a comfortable buffer around your travel dates. The 30 day tourist visa fee is USD 50. You can apply and pay online in advance here: https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                                • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                                • Fitness Level: This is a strenuous and technical trek that spends 9 consecutive nights above 3,700 m, including 5 nights above 4,500 m, with a single technical pass crossing at 5,755 m on Day 11 that involves crampons, a harness, and fixed ropes. Only trekkers with strong fitness and prior high altitude trekking experience should book this route.

                                • Technical Requirements: The crossing of Tashi Lapcha Pass involves glacier travel and sections of fixed rope on rock and ice. Your guide team sets up and manages the ropes, but trekkers should be comfortable using crampons and a harness, or willing to be closely guided through the technical sections.

                                • Permits Required: This trek requires the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit (GCAP), a Rolwaling Restricted Area Permit for the section administered under Gaurishankar Rural Municipality Ward 9, the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry fee for the Khumbu side of the route. All permits are arranged by us and included in your trek package.

                                • Road Conditions: The drive between Kathmandu and Singati Bazar follows a mountain road through Charikot that can be affected by weather or seasonal landslides, occasionally requiring extra travel time.

                                • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude evacuation, and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek, given the altitude and technical terrain involved.

                                • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP, though it is a good idea to carry some Nepali Rupees for smaller personal expenses on the trail.

                                Permits Required

This trek needs five separate permits, since it crosses from the Rolwaling side into the Sagarmatha National Park side of the Khumbu.

The Pachhermo Peak Permit fee changes by season, with spring generally the most expensive and winter and summer the lowest. All five permits are arranged by us and included in your trek package, so you do not need to apply for any of them separately. Permit costs are set by the Nepal government and can change, so we always confirm the current rate before your trek dates are finalized.

                                Accommodations, Meals, and Transportation

                                • Typical Accommodation Used: From Day 1 in Singati Bazar through Day 7 in Na, and again from Day 12 in Thame through Day 14 in Lukla, you will stay in mountain lodges and teahouses. From Day 8 through Day 11, covering Tsho Rolpa, the Trakarding Glacier, Tashi Lapcha Phedi, and Pachermo, you will camp in tents, since no lodges exist along this section of the route.

                                • Meals: Full board meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included at every stop from Day 1 through Day 14. Meals in Kathmandu are not included.

                                • Guide Support: An experienced licensed guide, trained in glacier travel and fixed rope work, accompanies you throughout the trek, along with porters and camp staff for the glacier crossing section.

                                • Transportation: This package includes a private drive from Kathmandu to Singati Bazar and a domestic flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. All movement between villages and camps during the trekking days is done on foot.

                                Seasonal and Weather Updates

                                • Autumn (September to November): This season generally offers stable weather and clear mountain views, which is important for a safe crossing of Tashi Lapcha Pass, though nights at Na, Tsho Rolpa, and the high camps are very cold.

                                • Spring (March to May): Spring offers generally good trekking conditions at lower elevation, though weather around the pass and the glacier section can still change quickly, so flexibility around the crossing date is important.

                                Health and Safety

                                • General Wellbeing: This trek spends multiple consecutive nights above 3,700 m and crosses a pass above 5,700 m. Trekkers should be aware of the signs of altitude sickness and communicate any symptoms to their guide promptly.

                                • Healthcare Facilities: Basic health posts are available in some larger villages such as Charikot and Namche Bazaar, and full hospital facilities are available in Kathmandu. Your guide carries a first aid kit and can assist with basic treatment and local arrangements if needed during the trek.

                                • Pacing: The single acclimatization day at Na on Day 7 is the main built in rest day on this itinerary. Given the pace of ascent above Na, trekkers should be well prepared physically before starting the trek.

                                • Weather Awareness: Weather around Tsho Rolpa, the Trakarding Glacier, and Tashi Lapcha Pass can change quickly. Follow the instructions of your guide at all times, particularly on Day 11.

                                Important Notices

                                • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice issued by your home country. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                                • Remote Terrain: Sections of this trek, particularly from Na through Pachermo on Day 8 through Day 11, are very remote, with no shops, ATMs, or reliable mobile network. Carry sufficient cash for the full trekking portion of your trip.

                                • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs, ask permission before photographing monks and local families, and support the local economy of the Rolwaling Valley and the Khumbu region during your trek.

                                Trip Preparations
                                • How difficult is the Rolwaling Trek with Tashi Lapcha Pass?

This is a demanding high altitude trek with glacier travel, camping, and a technical pass crossing at 5,755 m. Previous high altitude trekking experience is recommended.

                                • No. This trek involves a technical glacier crossing with fixed ropes and crampons, along with multiple nights above 4,500 m. Prior high altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended.

                                • You do not need advanced climbing skills, but you should be comfortable using crampons and a harness on fixed ropes under the close guidance of an experienced guide, since the crossing involves steep rock and ice sections.

                                • One. Day 7 is a full acclimatization day at Na, before the trek continues into the higher and more technical section of the route.

                                • From Day 8 at Tsho Rolpa Lake through Day 11 at Pachermo, since no lodges exist along this stretch of the route. Lodge accommodation resumes at Thame on Day 12.

                                • This trek requires the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit, a Rolwaling Restricted Area Permit, the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry fee. All of these are included in the package and arranged by us.

                                • Yes. The trek ends with a flight from Lukla to Kathmandu on Day 15. Lukla flights are weather dependent and can be delayed or rescheduled at short notice, so we recommend building a buffer day into your travel plans after the trek.
