Overview

Welcome to Nepal! We welcome you in a country where travel experiences of the mountain, rivers and jungle are possible within a few hundred kilometres. Here, we have built a 18 day trip including all of the above. You will walk the classic Annapurna Circuit through changing valleys, cross Thorong La pass at 5416 meters, spend a couple of days exploring old Mustang villages like Kagbeni, Muktinath, Jomsom and Marpha, jump into a raft on the Kali Gandaki river, and finish it all off searching for wildlife in Chitwan National Park. It is a big trip, but every part of the trip has been planned so you get to enjoy it properly instead of just passing through them.

With our expert and professional team at work, we have put this itinerary together the same way we plan every trip, with honest communication, smooth arrangements and keeping travel safety always in mind. You, as a newbie in the adventure world or an expert trekking or a rafting veteran, you are welcome on board this trip with just a reasonable level of fitness. The trip is truly built to satisfy your genuine interest to explore Nepal from multi-dimensional aspects beyond the usual tourist schedules. Whether you are coming with friends, as a couple or completely on your own, we keep things simple and steady so the trip feels like a planned adventure, not a casual race.

Tour Highlights

Here is a quick look at what makes this trip special before we walk you through it day by day.

1. Walking the full Annapurna Circuit
Honestly, this is one of the best things about the trek, you are not stuck with one kind of scenery for 18 days. You start off among green forest trails and small farming villages, and slowly the landscape strips itself down to dry open hills as you get closer to Manang. It genuinely feels like walking through a few different countries.

2. Crossing Thorong La pass
This is the moment everyone is secretly a little nervous about and a little excited about at the same time. Standing at 5416 meters, the highest point of the entire trip, with prayer flags flapping around you and the Annapurna range spread out below, is the kind of thing you end up telling people about for years.

3. Time in Mustang
After the pass, the trip takes a completely different turn. You get to walk through Muktinath temple, wander the narrow lanes of the old walled village of Kagbeni, and relax under the apple trees in Marpha. It gives you a real feel for the Tibetan culture that has shaped this side of Nepal for centuries.

4. Rafting the Kali Gandaki river
By this point your legs have earned a break, so we hand you a paddle instead of trekking poles. Jumping into a raft and riding the rapids of the Kali Gandaki is a proper adrenaline boost and a fun way to see the region from a completely different angle.

5. Camping by the river
Two nights at a simple tented camp right on the riverbank, no teahouses, no hotels, just the sound of the water and a clear sky above you. It sounds small on paper, but this is usually the part people bring up first when they talk about the trip afterward.

6. Looking for wildlife in Chitwan
The trip wraps up with jeep safaris and canoe rides through Chitwan National Park, keeping your eyes peeled for rhinos, deer and, if the day goes your way, maybe even a Bengal tiger. It is a proper jungle ending to a trip that started in the mountains.

After breakfast, we take you on a guided tour of Kathmandu's most important heritage sites. This includes Pashupatinath, one of the holiest Hindu temples in the world, Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas on earth, and Swayambhunath, more commonly known as the monkey temple, sitting on a hill overlooking the whole valley. From there we visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, walking through its old palace courtyards and temples and learning about the tradition of the Kumari, the living goddess. In the afternoon our team goes through your trekking gear and finalizes the permits, and in the evening you will meet your guide for a short pre trek discussion.

Today you leave the city behind and drive out along the Prithvi Highway before turning north into the Marsyangdi valley. The road follows the river through Besisahar and continues climbing into the hills, passing small roadside villages along the way. By the time you reach Chame, the district headquarters of Manang, you are already surrounded by forested hillsides and your first real glimpses of the Annapurna range.

Your trekking boots finally hit the trail today. The path takes you through pine forest with Annapurna II appearing between the trees now and then. You pass through a couple of small Gurung villages along the way before reaching Pisang, a village split into upper and lower sections, with the upper part known for its older stone houses and monastery.

The landscape opens up noticeably today as you leave the forest behind. The trail passes through Braga village, home to Braga Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries in the Annapurna region built directly into the cliff face, before continuing on to Manang. Manang itself is a proper little town with a bakery, a health post and a strong Tibetan Buddhist character that sets it apart from the villages lower down the valley.

We spend an extra day in Manang so your body can properly adjust to the altitude before going any higher. Rather than resting the whole day, we take a short excursion up to the Gangapurna Lake viewpoint above the village, which offers a close look at the Gangapurna glacier. Some travelers also choose to walk up to Praken Gompa, a small monastery just above Manang, for a quieter option.

Leaving Manang, the trail follows the Jarsang Khola valley north through the small settlement of Tenki. Trees disappear almost completely here and the trail opens into wide grazing pastures, which is exactly how Yak Kharka got its name, since yaks are a common sight along this stretch.

The trail passes through Letdar before the final push up to High Camp, the last stop before Thorong La. Rooms here are basic, but everyone tends to turn in early since tomorrow's crossing means a very early start.

Letdar, final approach to Thorong La

This is the day the whole trek builds up to. You start walking before sunrise, headlamps lighting the frozen trail, and climb steadily toward Thorong La at 5416 meters, higher than Everest Base Camp. Reaching the top, with prayer flags snapping in the wind and the Annapurna range spread out around you, is the kind of moment that stays with you long after the trip ends. The descent on the western side drops steeply down to Muktinath, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

Today feels completely different from the days before it. You start at Muktinath temple, walking through its courtyard with the eternal flame and the row of water spouts pilgrims pass through. From there you continue to Kagbeni, an old walled village at the edge of Upper Mustang that still feels frozen in time, then on through Jomsom and into Marpha, known for its apple orchards, narrow stone streets and small local distillery. The day ends in Tatopani, where natural hot springs beside the river are waiting for anyone whose legs need a break.

                                      Final Recommendation

The 18 Days Annapurna Circuit Trek with Mustang, Kali Gandaki River Rafting and Chitwan Safari is not your average trip. Very few journeys let you cross the 5416 meter Thorong La Pass, walk through old Mustang villages like Kagbeni and Marpha, paddle through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, and sit quietly in a jeep watching a rhino cross the trail, all within the same trip. From the ancient temples of Kathmandu to the high desert plateau of Mustang, the rapids of the Kali Gandaki River, and the jungles of Chitwan National Park, this itinerary gives you the full range of what Nepal has to offer rather than just one part of it.

Whether during the trip planning conversation or throughout the actual journey, we are genuinely committed to transparent communication, smooth arrangements, authentic experiences, travel safety, and sustainable travel. We plan to be there with you every step of the way, whether that means catching your breath at the top of Thorong La Pass, laughing your way through a rapid on the Kali Gandaki River, or watching the sun set over Phewa Lake. If this trip sounds like the kind of adventure you have been looking for, get in touch with us, and we will help you plan every part of it.

                                      Trip Preparations
                                      • How difficult is this trip?

It is graded moderate to challenging, mainly because of the altitude during the Thorong La crossing and the number of consecutive days on the trail. No technical climbing skills are needed, but a decent base level of fitness makes the whole trip more enjoyable.

                                      • It helps, but it is not required. What matters most is your current fitness level and being honest with your guide about how you are feeling, especially during the higher altitude days.

                                      • Your guide keeps an eye on everyone as you gain altitude, especially from Manang onwards. Mild symptoms are managed with rest at the same elevation, and if things do not improve, we descend. This is why proper travel insurance covering high altitude trekking is required for this trip.

                                      • Yes, our rafting guides are experienced and all safety equipment, including helmets and life jackets, is provided. You will get a full safety briefing before getting into the water.

                                      • March to May and September to November give you the most stable weather for the trekking, rafting and safari sections of the trip.

                                      • It is best to withdraw what you need in Kathmandu before starting the trek, since ATMs become unreliable once you are in the mountains. Budget a bit extra for hot showers, snacks, charging devices and tips for your guide and porters.

                                      • Given the altitude and the physical demands of both the trek and the rafting section, this trip is generally better suited for adults and older teens who are reasonably fit.
