Swayambhunath follows, its stupa visible from across the valley and its base lined with prayer wheels and shrines. The day ends in Pharping Valley, south of the city, home to caves associated with Guru Padmasambhava and a cluster of monasteries built into the hillside.

A stop in Bhaktapur, the best-preserved of the valley's three medieval royal cities, takes in Durbar Square and its Newar temple architecture before the drive continues to Namobuddha. According to Buddhist tradition, this hillside site marks the spot where a former incarnation of the Buddha offered his own body to feed a starving tigress and her cubs, one of the jataka stories most closely tied to a physical location in Nepal. The overnight stay is at the monastery guest house itself.

A guided meditation session inside the garden closes the day.

    Trip Information

    Know Before You Book

    • Visa Requirements: All travelers except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal; most nationalities can get a visa on arrival. A 15-day tourist visa is USD 30 (30-day: $50, 90-day: $125), which comfortably covers this 7-day trip.

    • Required Permits: None beyond standard heritage-site entry tickets; there's no conservation area or trekking permit needed on this route.

    • Physical Preparation: No trekking experience or particular fitness level is needed. Days involve sightseeing and short walks within temple, monastery, and heritage site grounds.

    • Domestic Flights: Two short domestic flights are included, Kathmandu–Bhairahawa (for Lumbini) and the return, each around 25–30 minutes and subject to weather delays, particularly in the case of low cloud cover.

    • Travel Insurance: Not included and recommended for general trip cancellation and medical coverage even though the itinerary involves no trekking or altitude exposure.

    Accommodations, Meals & Transportation

    • Monastery Guest House: The one-night stay in Namobuddha is at a working monastery, simpler than the hotels on either side of it, typically twin-share with shared bathroom facilities.

    • Meals: Breakfast is included every day; lunch and dinner follow the schedule set out in the itinerary rather than being included at every meal.

    • Room-Sharing Policy: Standard twin-share throughout; a single supplement is available at the hotels in Kathmandu and Lumbini, though single rooms at the Namobuddha guest house are more limited.

    • Vehicle Transfers: All road transfers, including the Bhaktapur–Namobuddha leg, are by private vehicle rather than shared transport.

    Seasonal & Weather Notes

    • Best Seasons: Autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May) give the clearest weather for both the Kathmandu Valley and Lumbini's lowland climate.

    • Winter: Workable and generally mild in Kathmandu and Lumbini, since this itinerary doesn't climb into the hills.

    • Monsoon (June–August): Lumbini's lowland heat and humidity peak in this window, and afternoon rain is common in the Kathmandu Valley, though sightseeing here is less weather-dependent than a trekking itinerary.

    • Weather-Dependent Flights: Both included domestic flights can be delayed by weather, particularly in the early morning. Travelers with tight onwards connections should build in a buffer day.

    Health & Safety

    • Altitude: The highest point on this trip is Namobuddha at 1,750 m, well below any altitude of concern.

    • Lowland Climate: Lumbini sits at around 150 m and can be hot and humid outside the cooler months; sun protection and hydration matter more there than in Kathmandu.

    • Healthcare Facilities: Kathmandu has well-equipped hospitals; facilities in Namobuddha and Lumbini are more limited, though neither is far from a regional center.

    • Drinking Water: Bottled or treated water is recommended throughout.

    Packing Checklist

    • Clothing: Light, breathable layers for Lumbini's lowland heat, plus a light jacket for cooler mornings and evenings in Kathmandu and Namobuddha.

    • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes for temple grounds and cobbled streets in Bhaktapur; no hiking boots are needed on this itinerary.

    • Other Gear: A daypack, a reusable water bottle, and a scarf or shawl for modest dress at monasteries and temples.

    • Documents: Passport with 6+ months validity, visa, travel insurance details, and a couple of passport photos for heritage-site or monastery registration where required.

    • Etiquette Items: Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for temple and monastery visits and a small donation for the butter-lamp offering if you'd like to take part.

    Important Notices

    • Guide Requirement: An English-speaking guide accompanies the group throughout, included in the package.

    • Monastery Etiquette: The Namobuddha stay is inside a functioning monastery; quiet hours, modest dress, and permission before photographing monks are expected.

    • Itinerary Flexibility: Timings may shift slightly around flight schedules or site opening hours; the guide will advise on any changes.
