Trip Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek including Poonhill is in fact the real Annapurna Circuit Trek in its original form started in the 80s. This trip is for a total of 15 days with some jeep rides from Kathmandu to Dharapani, and Muktinath to Tatopani before trekking up to Ghorepani. It is the most diverse high altitude and classic long distance treks in Nepal. It circles the Annapurna massif through the Marsyangdi valley, over Thorong La Pass, and down into the Kali Gandaki valley. Along the way, the trail passes through Gurung and Manangi villages with close views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Dhaulagiri.

This 15 day itinerary combines a drive to Dharapani with a full trek across Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. Along the way, you soak in the natural hot springs at Tatopani and hike to Poon Hill for sunrise. The journey ends with a return through Pokhara before flying back to Kathmandu.

The trek requires good physical fitness, since the route reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass. A dedicated acclimatization day at Manang helps your body adjust before the climb continues. Some prior hiking experience is recommended before joining.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Highlights

  • Marsyangdi Valley Drive: The trek starts with a long, scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani. The road follows the Marsyangdi River through small towns, terraced farms, and traditional villages, giving you an easy introduction to the mountains before the walking begins.

  • Chame and the Apple Orchards: Beyond Dharapani, the trail passes through Chame, the headquarters of the Manang district, known for its apple orchards and hot spring.

  • Upper Pisang and the Paungda Danda Rock Face: The route to Upper Pisang offers close views of Annapurna II and the sweeping Paungda Danda rock face along the valley.

  • Manang, Gateway to the High Himalaya: The trail reaches Manang at 3,540 m, the largest village in the upper Marsyangdi valley, with close views of Gangapurna and Annapurna III right above the rooftops. A full acclimatization day is spent here, giving your body time to adjust before you continue up toward Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi.

  • Thorong La Pass: This is the highlight of the entire trek. You cross Thorong La at 5,416 m, the highest point of the journey, early in the morning while the trail is still firm and the weather is calmer. From the top, you get wide views across the mountains in every direction before a long descent toward Muktinath.

  • Muktinath Temple: The route reaches Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, known for its 108 water spouts and its eternal flame.

  • Jomsom and the Kali Gandaki Valley: The drive from Muktinath to Tatopani passes through Jomsom and the lower Mustang area, following the Kali Gandaki valley, one of the deepest river valleys in the world. The landscape here is dry and windswept, very different from the green hills earlier in the trek.

  • Tatopani Hot Springs: A rest day at Tatopani allows time to soak in the natural hot springs beside the Kali Gandaki River before the climb toward Ghorepani.

  • Poon Hill Sunrise: An early morning hike to Poon Hill at 3,210 m offers a wide panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri I.

Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal. Once you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal with our company name and logo board. They will take you to your hotel in Kathmandu, where you can check in and rest after your flight. The rest of the day is free for you to relax, walk around nearby, or simply recover from travel. In the evening, our guide will meet you for a short briefing about the trek ahead, followed by a welcome dinner where you can meet the rest of your group.

  • Route: Tribhuvan International Airport to Hotel in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,400 m

  • Accommodation: 3 star hotel

  • Meals: Welcome Dinner

  • Highlights: Arrival in Nepal, airport transfer, hotel check in, and trek briefing

Your journey begins early with a long private drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani. The route follows the Prithvi Highway out of the city and then joins a mountain road that climbs up the Marsyangdi valley. Along the way, you pass through Besisahar, the main town of the Lamjung district, where the road becomes narrower and starts winding through the hills. This is a full day of driving, so it helps to bring snacks, water, and something to keep you comfortable. By the time you reach Dharapani, the surroundings already feel noticeably more mountainous than Kathmandu.

    • Route: Kathmandu to Dharapani by private vehicle

    • Altitude: 1,860 m

    • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

    • Highlights: Long scenic drive along the Marsyangdi valley, passing through Besisahar, first views of the Manang district hills, arrival in Dharapani

Today marks the real start of the trek on foot. From Dharapani, the trail follows the Marsyangdi River closely, moving through cool forests of pine and fir. The path is mostly gentle, with a few short climbs, and passes several small settlements along the way. As you get closer to Chame, the valley narrows and the mountain air starts to feel a little colder. Chame itself is the headquarters of the Manang district, and it has a natural hot spring beside the river, which is a nice place to relax after your first full day of walking. The village is also known for its apple orchards, so you may see apple products sold in local shops.

      • Route: Dharapani to Chame along the Marsyangdi River

      • Altitude: 2,670 m

      • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

      • Highlights: First full day of trekking, walking through pine and fir forest, arrival in Chame, optional visit to the local hot spring

From Chame, the trail continues up the Marsyangdi valley and passes directly beneath the Paungda Danda, a massive curved wall of rock that rises steeply above the trail. It is one of the most dramatic natural features you will see on the trek. As the valley slowly opens up, you get your first clear view of Annapurna II, a huge peak that will stay in view for much of the day. Near Pisang, the trail splits into a lower route and an upper route. We follow the upper route to Upper Pisang, which takes a little more effort but rewards you with better mountain views and a quieter path.

        • Route: Chame to Upper Pisang via the upper trail

        • Altitude: 3,300 m

        • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

        • Highlights: Walking beneath the Paungda Danda rock face, first clear view of Annapurna II, arrival in Upper Pisang

Today continues along the higher and more scenic upper trail, passing through the villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal. These two villages sit right below Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, and the views from here are some of the closest and clearest on the whole circuit. After Ngawal, the trail drops down slightly before climbing again to reach Manang, the largest village in this part of the valley. Manang is an important stop on the trek, both for its size and for the acclimatization day you will spend here tomorrow.

          • Route: Upper Pisang to Manang via Ghyaru and Ngawal

          • Altitude: 3,540 m

          • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

          • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

          • Highlights: Close up views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, walking through Ghyaru and Ngawal villages, arrival in Manang

Today is a full rest day in Manang, planned to help your body get used to the higher altitude before you continue toward Thorong La Pass. It is best not to spend the whole day resting in bed. Instead, a short, gentle walk to a nearby viewpoint or to Gangapurna Lake helps your body adjust faster than staying still all day. Many trekkers also attend the free altitude sickness talk held in the village each afternoon, which explains what symptoms to watch for as you go higher. You will sleep in the same lodge again tonight.

            • Route: Acclimatization day around Manang

            • Altitude: 3,540 m

            • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

            • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

            • Highlights: Rest and acclimatization, optional walk to Gangapurna Lake, altitude sickness talk in the village

After leaving Manang, the trail moves away from the larger villages and into quieter, higher ground. The path follows the Jarsang Khola valley, climbing steadily, and the trees slowly disappear as you gain height. The landscape becomes more open and rugged with each hour. You will reach Yak Kharka in the early afternoon, a small settlement named after the yak pastures found on the surrounding hillsides, where herds of yaks are often seen grazing nearby.

              • Route: Manang to Yak Kharka along the Jarsang Khola valley

              • Altitude: 4,050 m

              • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

              • Highlights: Entering the high alpine zone, views of grazing yaks, arrival in Yak Kharka

Today's walk is shorter than the day before, which gives your body extra time to adjust before the pass crossing. The trail climbs along a narrow path above the valley, with the surroundings becoming increasingly bare and rocky. By early afternoon, you will arrive at Thorong Phedi, the last stop before Thorong La Pass. Some trekkers choose to push on further to High Camp, but staying at Thorong Phedi allows for a steadier, safer approach to the pass the next morning.

                • Route: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi

                • Altitude: 4,525 m

                • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                • Highlights: Reaching the base of Thorong La Pass, final preparation before the crossing

This is the longest and most demanding day of the entire trek, so you will start very early, often before sunrise, while the trail is still frozen and firm underfoot. The climb to Thorong La Pass is steady but tiring, reaching 5,416 m at its highest point, the highest altitude of the whole journey. The air feels noticeably thinner near the top, so a slow and steady pace is important. From the pass, prayer flags mark the highest point, and on a clear day you get wide views across the surrounding peaks. After a short rest, the trail drops steeply down the other side of the mountain, descending for several hours into the Kali Gandaki valley until you reach Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

                  • Route: Thorong Phedi to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass

                  • Altitude: 5,416 m at the pass, descending to 3,760 m in Muktinath

                  • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                  • Highlights: Crossing Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek, long descent into the Kali Gandaki valley, arrival at Muktinath

After breakfast, there is time to visit the Muktinath temple before you set off. From here, a private vehicle takes you down through the Kali Gandaki valley toward Tatopani. The drive passes through Jomsom, a windswept town known for its apple orchards and as a hub for flights in and out of the region. The road then continues alongside the Kali Gandaki River, running through one of the deepest river valleys in the world, with dry hillsides on either side that look very different from the greener valleys earlier in the trek.

                    • Route: Muktinath to Tatopani via Jomsom by private vehicle

                    • Altitude: 1,190 m

                    • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                    • Highlights: Morning visit to Muktinath temple, drive through Jomsom, journey along the Kali Gandaki gorge, arrival in Tatopani

Today is a free day in Tatopani, giving your body a proper chance to recover after the pass crossing and the long drive. Tatopani means hot water in Nepali, and the village is well known for its natural hot springs right beside the Kali Gandaki River. Many trekkers spend part of the day soaking in the warm water, which helps ease sore legs and tired muscles after several hard days on the trail. The rest of the day is yours to relax, wash clothes, or simply enjoy being at a lower, warmer altitude again.

                      • Route: Rest day in Tatopani

                      • Altitude: 1,190 m

                      • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                      • Highlights: Full rest day, soaking in the natural hot springs, free time to relax in the village

Leaving Tatopani, the trail begins a long and steady climb through terraced farmland and thick rhododendron forest. This is one of the more physically demanding days of the trek, since you gain a lot of height over the course of the day, but the trail is well shaded and pleasant to walk. As you near Ghorepani, the forest starts to open up, giving you your first views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South in the distance. You will reach the village with enough time to rest before the early start planned for the next morning.

                        • Route: Tatopani to Ghorepani through rhododendron forest

                        • Altitude: 2,880 m

                        • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                        • Highlights: Steady climb through terraced farmland and forest, first views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South, arrival in Ghorepani

You will wake up very early, well before sunrise, and climb the short but steep trail up to Poon Hill. Reaching the top just as the sun comes up rewards you with one of the most famous mountain views in the Annapurna region, taking in Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna I all from a single spot. After enjoying the sunrise, you return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then continue trekking downhill through forest and small villages toward Birethanti. This walk marks the final stretch of trekking on this trip. From Birethanti, a private vehicle will meet you and drive you to Pokhara, a relaxed lakeside city beside Phewa Lake.

                          • Route: Ghorepani to Poon Hill and back, then trek to Birethanti and drive to Pokhara

                          • Altitude: 3,210 m at Poon Hill, descending to 822 m in Pokhara

                          • Accommodation: 3 star hotel

                          • Meals: Breakfast and lunch

                          • Highlights: Sunrise views from Poon Hill, final day of trekking, descent through forest villages, arrival in Pokhara

A private vehicle takes you from Pokhara back to Kathmandu, following the Prithvi Highway and running alongside the Trishuli River for much of the journey. Once you arrive in Kathmandu, the rest of the day is completely free, giving you time to rest properly, take a long shower, or explore parts of the city if you still have the energy. In the evening, the whole group will gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate finishing the trek together.

                            • Route: Pokhara to Kathmandu by private vehicle

                            • Altitude: 1,400 m

                            • Highlights: Scenic drive along the Trishuli River, free time in Kathmandu, farewell dinner with the group

On your final day, after breakfast at the hotel, our representative will take you to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time for your international flight home. This brings your Annapurna Circuit Trek to an end.

                              • Route: Hotel in Kathmandu to Tribhuvan International Airport

                              • Altitude: 1,400 m

                                Trip Information

                                Know Before You Book

                                • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Since this is a 15 day trek and road conditions in the mountains can occasionally cause delays, we recommend applying for a 30 day tourist visa, which costs USD 50, to give yourself a comfortable buffer around your travel dates. You can apply and pay online in advance at https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                                • Passport Validity: Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                                • Fitness Level: This trek reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass and spends several days above 4,000 m. Trekkers should have a good level of fitness, and some prior hiking or trekking experience along with regular walking practice beforehand is recommended.

                                • Road Conditions: The drive between Kathmandu and Dharapani, and between Muktinath and Tatopani, follows mountain roads that can be affected by weather or seasonal landslides, occasionally requiring extra travel time.

                                • What is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The highest point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m, reached on Day 9 of this itinerary.

                                • Driving from Kathmandu to Dharapani lets the trek begin at a higher altitude, saving several days of walking along the lower road section while still following the classic circuit route through the high Marsyangdi and Kali Gandaki valleys.

                                • Yes. After crossing Thorong La Pass on Day 9, the trail descends directly to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists known for its 108 water spouts and eternal flame.

                                • Yes. On Day 13, an early morning hike takes you to Poon Hill at 3,210 m for sunrise views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre, before the trek continues down to Birethanti and Pokhara.

                                • Thorong La involves a long, steep climb and descent on exposed, high altitude terrain, and is best crossed early in the morning with the guidance of an experienced local guide, particularly in poor weather.

                                • Yes. A full acclimatization day is included in Manang on Day 6, before the trail continues to higher elevations at Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi.
