Trip Overview

The 8 days short Annapurna Circuit Trek is a journey starting in Kathmandu and ending in Pokhara with six trekking days through the world famous Annapurna cuicuit. The trip is a high altitude journey through the central Himalayas encirclying the mighty Mt Annapurna! The short and classical 8-day trip is filled with thriling trekking adventure around Annapurna Himalayas.

An easy road drive takes you from Kathmandu to Chame at the start, and a comfortable road journey brings you from Muktinath to Pokhara at the end. This keeps the main trekking portion to 5 walking days, plus an acclimatization day at Manang, 3,540 m. The trail follows the classic Annapurna Circuit route through Upper Pisang, Manang, Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi or High Camp, and Muktinath, with close views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna along the way.

The trek reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass and includes 3 days at elevations above 4,000 m. A good level of fitness and some prior hiking experience are recommended. The acclimatization day in Manang gives your body important time to adjust before the climb toward the pass. This itinerary suits trekkers with limited time who still want to experience the core high altitude section of the Annapurna Circuit and complete the full crossing of Thorong La Pass into the sacred town of Muktinath.

Major Attractions During Annapurna Circuit Trek

Chame

Chame is the headquarter of Manang District and the first major mountain stop of the trek at 2,670 m. It is known for its natural hot spring beside the Marsyangdi River. The hot spring is a popular spot for trekkers to relax after the long drive from Kathmandu. Pine and fir forests around the village give Chame a peaceful mountain setting.

Upper Pisang

Upper Pisang is at 3,300 m and is reached by the scenic upper trail. The route offers beautiful views of Annapurna II and the large Paungda Danda rock face. The traditional village and surrounding mountains make Upper Pisang a beautiful stop on the trek.

Manang

Manang is an important village on the Annapurna Circuit and a key place for acclimatization at 3,540 m. Annapurna III and Gangapurna can be seen from the village. During the acclimatization day, you can explore Manang or take a short walk to Gangapurna Lake and nearby Braga Monastery reveals some of the closest and most dramatic mountain views on the entire trek.

Muktinath

Muktinath is at 3,760 m on the Mustang side of Thorong La Pass. It is an important religious site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The area is known for its temple, 108 water spouts, and natural flame. The mountain scenery around Muktinath makes it a special stop after crossing Thorong La.

Pokhara

Pokhara is a beautiful lakeside city at 822 m and the final stop of the trip. It sits beside Phewa Lake and offers a peaceful break after eight days in the mountains. On clear days, you can enjoy views of the Annapurna range and relax by the lake before continuing your onward journey.

Altitude and Activities

Itinerary

Your journey begins early with a long private drive from Kathmandu all the way to Chame. The route follows the Prithvi Highway out of the city and then joins a mountain road that climbs up the Marsyangdi valley. Along the way, you pass through Besisahar, the main town of the Lamjung district, and continue further up the valley on a narrower, winding road as far as Chame. This is a full and demanding day of travel on mountain roads, so bring snacks, water, and something that keeps you comfortable, and allow extra time in case of road delays. Chame is the headquarters of the Manang district and has a natural hot spring beside the river, a welcome way to relax after the long drive.

  • Route: Kathmandu to Chame by private vehicle, via Besisahar

  • Altitude: 2,670 m

  • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

  • Highlights: Long drive along the Marsyangdi valley, passing through Besisahar, arrival in Chame, optional visit to the local hot spring

From Chame, the trail continues up the Marsyangdi valley and passes directly beneath the Paungda Danda, a massive curved wall of rock that rises steeply above the trail. It is one of the most dramatic natural features you will see on the trek. As the valley slowly opens up, you get your first clear view of Annapurna II, a huge peak that will stay in view for much of the day. Near Pisang, the trail splits into a lower route and an upper route. We follow the upper route to Upper Pisang, which takes a little more effort but rewards you with better mountain views and a quieter path.

    • Route: Chame to Upper Pisang via the upper trail

    • Altitude: 3,300 m

    • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

    • Highlights: Walking beneath the Paungda Danda rock face, first clear view of Annapurna II, arrival in Upper Pisang

Today continues along the higher and more scenic upper trail, passing through the villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal. These two villages sit right below Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, and the views from here are some of the closest and clearest on the whole circuit. After Ngawal, the trail drops down slightly before climbing again to reach Manang, the largest village in this part of the valley. Manang is an important stop on the trek, both for its size and for the acclimatization day you will spend here tomorrow.

      • Route: Upper Pisang to Manang via Ghyaru and Ngawal

      • Altitude: 3,540 m

      • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

      • Highlights: Close up views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, walking through Ghyaru and Ngawal villages, arrival in Manang

Today is a full rest day in Manang, planned to help your body get used to the higher altitude before you continue toward Thorong La Pass. It is best not to spend the whole day resting in bed. Instead, a short, gentle walk to a nearby viewpoint or to Gangapurna Lake helps your body adjust faster than staying still all day. Many trekkers also visit Braga Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the region, or attend the free altitude sickness talk held in the village each afternoon. You will sleep in the same lodge again tonight.

        • Route: Acclimatization day around Manang

        • Altitude: 3,540 m

        • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

        • Highlights: Rest and acclimatization, optional walk to Gangapurna Lake, visit to Braga Monastery, altitude sickness talk in the village

After leaving Manang, the trail moves away from the larger villages and into quieter, higher ground. The path follows the Jarsang Khola valley, climbing steadily, and the trees slowly disappear as you gain height. The landscape becomes more open and rugged with each hour. You will reach Yak Kharka in the early afternoon, a small settlement named after the yak pastures found on the surrounding hillsides, where herds of yaks are often seen grazing nearby.

          • Route: Manang to Yak Kharka along the Jarsang Khola valley

          • Altitude: 4,050 m

          • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

          • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

          • Highlights: Entering the high alpine zone, views of grazing yaks, arrival in Yak Kharka

Today's walk is shorter than the day before, which gives your body extra time to adjust before the pass crossing. The trail climbs along a narrow path above the valley, with the surroundings becoming increasingly bare and rocky. Most groups stop at Thorong Phedi, the traditional last stop before Thorong La Pass, though some choose to push on further and spend the night at High Camp, which shortens the following day's climb slightly. Your guide will advise which option suits the group based on pace, weather, and how everyone is acclimatizing.

            • Route: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi, with an option to continue to High Camp

            • Altitude: 4,525 m at Thorong Phedi or 4,800 m at High Camp

            • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

            • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

            • Highlights: Reaching the base of Thorong La Pass, final preparation before the crossing

This is the longest and most demanding day of the entire trek, so you will start very early, often before sunrise, while the trail is still frozen and firm underfoot. The climb to Thorong La Pass is steady but tiring, reaching 5,416 m at its highest point, the highest altitude of the whole journey. The air feels noticeably thinner near the top, so a slow and steady pace is important. From the pass, prayer flags mark the highest point, and on a clear day you get wide views across the surrounding peaks. After a short rest, the trail drops steeply down the other side of the mountain, descending for several hours into the Kali Gandaki valley until you reach Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

              • Route: Thorong Phedi or High Camp to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass

              • Altitude: 5,416 m at the pass, descending to 3,760 m in Muktinath

              • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

              • Highlights: Crossing Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek, long descent into the Kali Gandaki valley, arrival at Muktinath

After breakfast, there is time to visit the Muktinath temple before you set off on a long day of driving. A private vehicle takes you down through the Kali Gandaki valley, passing through Jomsom, a windswept town known for its apple orchards and as a hub for flights in and out of the region. The road continues alongside the Kali Gandaki River through one of the deepest river valleys in the world, with dry hillsides on either side, before eventually reaching lower, greener terrain and continuing on to Pokhara beside Phewa Lake. This is a long and full day on the road, so it is worth resting when you can along the way. Your trip concludes with an overnight stay in Pokhara.

                • Route: Muktinath to Pokhara via Jomsom by private vehicle

                • Altitude: 822 m

                • Accommodation: 3 star hotel

                • Meals: Breakfast

                • Highlights: Morning visit to Muktinath temple, drive through Jomsom, journey along the Kali Gandaki gorge, arrival and overnight stay in Pokhara

                  Trip Information

                  Know Before You Book

                  • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. For this 8 day trip, a 15 day tourist visa is sufficient and costs USD 30. You can apply and pay online in advance at https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                  • Passport Validity: Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                  • Fitness Level: This trek reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass and spends several days above 4,000 m. Because it is a shorter, faster version of the classic circuit with less time spent gradually gaining altitude at lower elevation, trekkers should have a good level of fitness, and some prior hiking or trekking experience along with regular walking practice beforehand is strongly recommended.

                  • Road Conditions: The long drive between Kathmandu and Chame, and the drive between Muktinath and Pokhara, follow mountain roads that can be affected by weather or seasonal landslides, occasionally requiring extra travel time.

                  • Group and Guide Requirements: Trekkers in the Annapurna region are required to trek with a licensed guide and hold a valid Trekkers Information Management System card and Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit.

                  • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude evacuation, and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek.

                  • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP, though it is a good idea to carry some Nepali Rupees for smaller personal expenses on the trail.

                  Accommodations, Meals and Transportation

                  • Typical Accommodation Used: During the trek, you will stay in mountain lodges and teahouses along the route, which offer simple rooms and dining halls where meals are served. On the final night, you will stay in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Pokhara.

                  • Meals: Full board meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included at every stop from Chame through Muktinath. Breakfast is included in Pokhara.

                  • Guide Support: An experienced English speaking guide accompanies you throughout the trek, assisting with permits, acclimatization, and trail navigation, including the crossing of Thorong La Pass. Porters are also provided to carry your duffle bag.

                  • Transportation: This package includes a private drive from Kathmandu to Chame and a private drive from Muktinath to Pokhara. All movement between villages on the trekking portion is done on foot.

                  Seasonal and Weather Updates

                  • Autumn (September to November): This is a popular season for the Annapurna Circuit, with generally stable weather and clear mountain views, though nights at higher altitude and around the pass are very cold.

                  • Spring (March to May): Spring offers milder temperatures at lower elevation, with generally good conditions for the pass crossing later in the season.

                  Health and Safety

                  • General Wellbeing: This trek includes two nights above 4,000 m, at Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi or High Camp, before crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m on Day 7. Trekkers should be aware of the signs of altitude sickness and communicate any symptoms to their guide promptly.

                  • Healthcare Facilities: Basic health posts are available in larger villages such as Manang, and full hospital facilities are available in Pokhara. Your guide can assist with local arrangements if required.

                  • Pacing: A comfortable, steady pace matters more than speed on this trek. The acclimatization day built in at Manang is there to help your body adjust before the pass crossing, so use it well. Since this itinerary skips the lower valley walking days of the standard circuit, it is worth paying extra attention to your guide's advice on pacing between Chame and Manang.

                  • Hydration: Drink sufficient fluids throughout the trekking days, especially at higher altitude and on the pass crossing day.

                  • Weather Awareness: Weather can change quickly around Thorong La Pass. Follow the instructions of your guide at all times, particularly regarding the timing of the pass crossing.

                  Packing Checklist

                  • Essential Clothing: Comfortable layered clothing suitable for trekking, including a warm down jacket for cold mornings, evenings, and the pass crossing.

                  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support and grip suitable for multiple days of walking on varied and high altitude terrain, including rocky sections near the pass.

                  • Trail Gear: A sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket for changing weather, along with the trekking poles provided as part of your package.

                  • Personal Items: A small daypack, reusable water bottle, personal toiletries, camera, and any personal medications you need, along with the duffle bag and sleeping bag provided as part of your package.

                  Important Notices

                  • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice issued by your home country. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                  • Remote Terrain: Fewer facilities such as shops, ATMs, and communication networks are available in the more remote sections of this trek, particularly around Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi or High Camp, and the pass crossing. Carry sufficient Nepali cash for the trekking portion of your trip, and plan ahead for limited phone or internet access in these areas.

                  • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs, ask permission before photographing monks and local families, and support the local economy of the Annapurna region during your trek.

                  Trip Preparations
                  • How is this 8 day trip different from the standard Annapurna Circuit itinerary?

This short Annapurna circuit trek skips the lower valley walking days between Besisahar and Chame by driving straight there, and it ends in Pokhara instead of looping back to Kathmandu. It focuses on the core high altitude section of the circuit, from Chame through Manang and over Thorong La Pass to Muktinath.

                  • You will need a Trekkers Information Management System card and an Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit. Both are arranged for you and included in the cost of this package.

                  • Your guide monitors conditions daily and will only proceed with the crossing when it is safe to do so. Since this is a fixed 8 day itinerary, get in touch with us in advance if you would like to discuss buffer days in case of a weather related delay.

                  • No. The trip concludes with an overnight stay in Pokhara on Day 8. Onward travel from Pokhara to Kathmandu, whether by road or by air, is not included and can be arranged separately.

                  • Both the drive from Kathmandu to Chame and the drive from Muktinath to Pokhara are done in a private vehicle arranged for your group, not shared public transport.
