Itinerary Overview

This 10 day, 9 night grand Bhutan journey is built for travelers who want to go beyond the classical Paro, Thimphu and Punakha route into the quieter valleys of central Bhutan. After the familiar western circuit, the journey continues through Phobjikha crosses the Pele La Pass (3,420 m) to Trongsa and yet another Yotong La Pass (3,425 m) to Bumthang. Bumthang is one of the most sacred centre of Himalayan Buddhism and home to important dzongs, sacred temples and traditional village life. A domestic flight from Bumthang then brings you back to Paro for a full day in the valley and the iconic Tiger's Nest hike before departure.

Here is a quick look at how your journey unfolds.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Paro and transfer to Thimphu, with a relaxed evening to settle in. Overnight Thimphu.

  • Day 2: Full day exploration of Thimphu, covering Buddhist culture, monasteries, markets, crafts and local life. Overnight Thimphu.

  • Day 3: Drive from Thimphu to Punakha via the Dochula Pass, Chimi Lhakhang and Punakha Dzong. Overnight Punakha.

  • Day 4: Drive from Punakha to Phobjikha and explore Gangtey Monastery and the peaceful valley. Overnight Phobjikha.

  • Day 5: Scenic mountain drive from Phobjikha to Trongsa, visiting Trongsa Dzong and Ta Dzong. Overnight Trongsa.

  • Day 6: Continue from Trongsa into central Bhutan through mountain landscapes to Bumthang. Overnight Bumthang.

  • Day 7: Full day exploration of Bumthang, covering Jakar Dzong, Kurjey Lhakhang, Jambay Lhakhang and local villages. Overnight Bumthang.

  • Day 8: Domestic flight from Bumthang to Paro. Overnight Paro.

  • Day 9: Full day in the Paro valley with the hike to Tiger's Nest. Overnight Paro.

  • Day 10: Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.

Why You Will Love This Trip

  • Beyond the Standard Bhutan Circuit: This journey goes beyond the commonly visited western Bhutan destinations such as Punakha or Phobjikha and reaches the historic and cultural heartland of central Bhutan. The addition of Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang creates a deeper experience of the country's landscapes, traditions and Buddhist heritage.

  • Two Nights in Bumthang: Bumthang is considered the spiritual heart of Bhutan. Two full nights here give you time to properly explore Jakar Dzong, Kurjey Lhakhang and Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the country, along with the surrounding farming villages.

  • Gangtey Monastery and the Phobjikha Valley: Gangtey Monastery sits on a ridge overlooking the wide, glacial Phobjikha Valley, giving you a clear viewpoint across the valley floor below. The valley itself is one of Bhutan's most peaceful landscapes, home to black necked cranes in winter.

  • Trongsa Dzong Viewpoint: As you approach Trongsa, the road offers a well known viewpoint across the valley where Trongsa Dzong comes into full view long before you reach it. The dzong is the ancestral seat of Bhutan's royal family, and the nearby Ta Dzong watchtower now houses a museum on the monarchy.

  • Pele La and Yotong La Passes: The route crosses two high mountain passes, Pele La between Phobjikha and Trongsa and Yotong La between Trongsa and Bumthang, both offering wide mountain views and some of the most scenic driving of the trip.

  • Chimi Lhakhang and Punakha Dzong: Along the way, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple linked to the saint Lama Drukpa Kunley, and Punakha Dzong, set where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet.

  • A Fast, Comfortable Return to Paro: Rather than a long road journey back through Trongsa, Phobjikha and Dochula Pass, this itinerary includes a domestic flight from Bumthang to Paro, saving travel time and giving you a full extra day in the Paro valley.

  • The Tiger's Nest Hike: The trip ends with a full day in Paro for the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, so the journey closes with Bhutan's most iconic landmark instead of a rushed final morning.

  • Best for Repeat and Experiential Travelers: This private route suits travelers who have already seen the Paro, Thimphu and Punakha circuit, or who want a fuller picture of Bhutan's culture and geography from the start, with the flexibility of their own guide and vehicle throughout.

The trail climbs through pine forest to a small cafeteria roughly halfway up, a good place to rest and get your first close view of the monastery clinging to the cliff face. From there, the trail continues to a viewpoint directly across from the monastery, before the final climb down and back up into Paro Taktsang itself, at about 3,120 m. The full hike usually takes between 4 and 6 hours round trip. In the afternoon, relax in Paro or take a short walk around the valley.

                      Seasonal and Weather Updates

                      • Spring (March to May): Spring is generally one of the best periods to visit Bhutan, with clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures in the valleys and rhododendrons blooming across the hillsides on the drive between Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang.

                      • Summer (June to August): Summer brings the monsoon, with regular rainfall across the country, including the mountain roads and passes on the way to Trongsa and Bumthang. Roads can be slippery in places, and mountain views from Dochula Pass, Pele La and Yotong La are less consistent during this period.

                      • Autumn (September to November): Autumn is generally the most popular season for travel to Bhutan, with clear skies, dry weather and the best conditions for mountain views from Dochula Pass and the high passes near Trongsa and Bumthang.

                      • Winter (December to February): Winter brings cold temperatures, especially in Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang, where nights can drop below freezing. The Phobjikha Valley is particularly notable in winter, as black necked cranes migrate there from the Tibetan Plateau and remain in the valley until around February.

                      Health and Safety

                      • General Wellbeing: The highest points of this trip are the Pele La and Yotong La passes between Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang, along with the Tiger's Nest at around 3,120 m on Day 9. Travelers should stay hydrated, walk at a comfortable pace and follow the guide's advice throughout the trip.

                      • Healthcare Facilities: Basic medical facilities are available in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Trongsa and Bumthang, with more comprehensive hospital facilities in Thimphu, the capital.

                      • Weather Awareness: Mountain weather, particularly at the Dochula Pass, the Pele La and Yotong La passes, and on the Tiger's Nest trail, can change quickly. Follow your guide's instructions closely in changing conditions.

                      • Road Travel: Bhutan's mountain roads can be winding, and this itinerary includes several driving days between central Bhutan and Trongsa. Travel times may vary according to weather, road conditions and traffic.

                      • Flight Considerations: The domestic flight from Bumthang to Paro on Day 8 is subject to weather conditions and seasonal schedules. In the rare event of cancellation, a road transfer will be arranged as a backup, which takes considerably longer.

                      Important Notices

                      • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice issued by your home country. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                      • Heritage Sites: Some monasteries, temples and dzongs may have specific visiting hours or restrictions. Your guide will assist with the visit according to local regulations.

                      • Flight Considerations: Paro International Airport is located in a mountainous area, and flight operations can occasionally be affected by weather conditions. The domestic flight from Bumthang to Paro on Day 8 is also weather dependent. Please plan your onward journey with some extra time in hand.

                      • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs at religious sites throughout the journey, dress modestly, and follow your guide's advice on appropriate behavior inside dzongs, monasteries and temples.

                      Trip Preparations
                      • Is this trip too long or tiring with all the driving between Trongsa and Bumthang?

There are a few longer driving days, especially Day 5 to Trongsa and Day 6 to Bumthang, but the domestic flight on Day 8 removes the longest drive of all, the return to Paro. With a private vehicle, you can stop for breaks whenever you need to.

                      • You need a moderate level of fitness. The Tiger's Nest hike on Day 9 is the main physical activity, along with shorter valley walks in Phobjikha and Bumthang. The rest of the trip is sightseeing and driving.

                      • Most Bhutan trips end at Punakha or Phobjikha. Trongsa and Bumthang add access to Trongsa Dzong and Bumthang's sacred temples, places most visitors to Bhutan never see, since typical shorter tours do not travel this far east.

                      • It is the main activity on Day 9, but it is not compulsory. You can hike partway to the cafeteria viewpoint for a closer view of the monastery and turn back from there, or spend the day at a more relaxed pace in Paro instead. Let your guide know your preference in advance.

                      • Yes. Since you have your own guide and vehicle for the full trip, days like Day 2 in Thimphu or Day 7 in Bumthang can be adjusted, and additional days or stops can be built in if you would like more time anywhere on the route.
