Itinerary Overview

This 12 day Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp trek combines two classic Himalayan routes in one journey. You fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara and drive to Jhinu Danda. From there you cross the suspension bridge and trek uphill to Sinuwa, then continue to Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. After a night in the sanctuary, you descend through Deurali and Dovan to Jhinu Danda. The trail then turns toward Mardi Himal, climbing through forest to Forest Camp and High Camp. On Day 9 you start around 4:00 AM for the Mardi Himal Viewpoint and Mardi Himal Base Camp, return to High Camp for lunch and descend to Badal Danda. A short trek to Siding and a 4WD drive take you back to Pokhara, followed by a flight to Kathmandu, a farewell dinner and your departure.

Here is a quick look at how your 12 day trek unfolds.

Why You Will Love This Trek

  • Two Base Camps in One Trek: Why choose between Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal when you can walk both? You reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m on Day 4 and Mardi Himal Base Camp at up to 4,500 m on Day 9, all within 12 days.

  • A Night Inside the Annapurna Sanctuary: Many people visit Annapurna Base Camp for a short stop, but here you stay the night. You watch the light change on Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Machhapuchhre at sunset, and see them again in the morning.

  • Sunrise from the Mardi Himal Viewpoint: On Day 9 you leave High Camp around 4:00 AM to reach the Mardi Himal Viewpoint at 4,200 m in time for sunrise. It is the most memorable morning of the trek, with Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli glow in the first light.

  • Machhapuchhre from Two Sides: You walk beneath the “Fishtail” mountain at Machhapuchhre Base Camp on the way to Annapurna Base Camp, and later see it again from High Camp on the Mardi Himal side. Same mountain, two very different views.

  • Forests, Waterfalls and Mountain Villages: Between Sinuwa and Deurali you walk through bamboo and rhododendron forests, past small settlements and waterfalls. On Day 8 you climb through more rhododendron forest to High Camp, and the views open up with every hour.

  • A Journey Through the Modi Khola Valley: After Annapurna Base Camp, you retrace the Modi Khola valley through Machhapuchhre Base Camp, Deurali and Dovan, seeing the same valley in the reverse direction and in a different light.

  • Natural Hot Springs near Jhinu Danda: On Day 6, after a long descent from Annapurna Base Camp, you reach Jhinu Danda. If time and energy allow, you can visit the natural hot springs nearby and rest your legs before the Mardi Himal section.

  • A Well Supported Trek with Comfort at Every Step: You begin with a welcome dinner and end with a farewell dinner, stay in 4 star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and enjoy full board meals in mountain lodges on the trail. Your Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and an experienced English speaking trekking guide are included, so you can focus on the walking.

Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal. Our representative will meet you outside the arrival terminal at Tribhuvan International Airport, holding a board with our company name, and take you to your 4 star hotel in Kathmandu. After you check in and rest, you will join a trip briefing with your tour representative, where the route, the daily walking times, permits, the packing list and safety guidance are explained. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner to start your trek.

  • Route: Tribhuvan International Airport to hotel in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: Approximately 1,350 m

  • Accommodation: 4 star hotel

  • Meals: Welcome dinner

  • Highlights: Airport pickup, trip briefing, hotel check in and welcome dinner

After an early breakfast, you transfer to the airport for your morning flight to Pokhara. Once you land, a private vehicle takes you on to Jhinu Danda, where your walking begins. You cross the suspension bridge and start climbing uphill through green forest and traditional mountain villages. The path is steady and mostly uphill, so take it slowly and enjoy the scenery. After around 5 to 6 hours, you reach Sinuwa at 2,360 m, where you spend your first night in the mountains. Think of today as a warm up for the longer days ahead.

    • Route: Kathmandu to Pokhara by air, Pokhara to Jhinu Danda by road, then Jhinu Danda to Sinuwa on foot

    • Altitude: 2,360 m at Sinuwa

    • Trekking: Approximately 5 to 6 hours

    • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

    • Highlights: Morning flight, suspension bridge crossing and first day of trekking through forests and villages

Today the trail enters the higher Himalayan landscape. You walk through bamboo and rhododendron forests, passing scenic settlements and waterfalls as you gradually gain height toward Deurali at 3,230 m. This is a particularly demanding day, and the walk may take around 8 to 10 hours depending on the route, your pace and the trail conditions. Start early, keep a steady pace, drink plenty of water and tell your guide how you are feeling. The reward is a night at Deurali, much closer to the sanctuary.

      • Route: Sinuwa to Deurali

      • Altitude: 3,230 m

      • Trekking: Approximately 8 to 10 hours

      • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

      • Highlights: Bamboo and rhododendron forests, waterfalls and a gradual climb into the higher Himalaya

This is the day you reach the sanctuary. From Deurali, the forest gives way to an open alpine landscape, and the mountains seem to grow larger with every step. You walk via Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), at the foot of Machhapuchhre, the “Fishtail” mountain, and continue to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m. The walk takes about 6 to 7 hours. At Annapurna Base Camp, you are surrounded by a ring of peaks that includes Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna III and Machhapuchhre. Spend the evening taking it all in. Nights here are very cold and can fall below freezing, so keep your warm layers ready.

        • Route: Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Annapurna Base Camp

        • Altitude: 4,130 m

        • Trekking: Approximately 6 to 7 hours

        • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

        • Highlights: Alpine landscape, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and the mountain sanctuary at Annapurna Base Camp

After enjoying the magnificent mountain scenery one last time, start the long descent. The trail leads back through Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Deurali toward Dovan at 2,500 m, retracing the beautiful Modi Khola valley. Walking down gives you a fresh view of the forests and the river valley you climbed through earlier. The day takes about 7 hours, and trekking poles are helpful for your knees on the steep sections.

          • Route: Annapurna Base Camp to Machhapuchhre Base Camp to Deurali to Dovan

          • Altitude: 2,500 m at Dovan

          • Trekking: Approximately 7 hours

          • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

          • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

          • Highlights: Mountain scenery and the Modi Khola valley

Today you keep descending through forests and villages to Jhinu Danda at 1,760 m. It is a long day, around 8 to 9 hours, but the air becomes warmer and the landscape greener as you leave the high mountains behind. After checking in at your lodge, take time to relax. If you still have time and energy, visit the natural hot springs near Jhinu Danda, a lovely way to rest tired legs after the walk to Annapurna Base Camp.

            • Route: Dovan to Jhinu Danda

            • Altitude: 1,760 m

            • Trekking: Approximately 8 to 9 hours

            • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

            • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

            • Highlights: Forest and village descent and the natural hot springs near Jhinu Danda, if time permits

Now the second part of your adventure begins. From Jhinu Danda, you start the connecting trek toward Mardi Himal. The trail follows forest paths and climbs steadily through dense woodland to Forest Camp at 2,550 m. Expect about 7 to 8 hours of walking, with a sustained uphill climb for much of the day. Go slowly, take regular breaks and enjoy the shade of the forest. Forest Camp is your first overnight stop on the Mardi Himal side.

              • Route: Jhinu Danda to Forest Camp

              • Altitude: 2,550 m

              • Trekking: Approximately 7 to 8 hours

              • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

              • Highlights: Dense woodland and a sustained uphill climb toward Mardi Himal

Today you climb through beautiful rhododendron forests, and the trees slowly thin out as the trail opens onto more exposed mountain terrain. The walk takes about 7 to 8 hours. As you near High Camp at 3,585 m, you get impressive views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range. Rest well tonight, eat a good dinner and go to bed early, because tomorrow starts well before sunrise.

                • Route: Forest Camp to High Camp

                • Altitude: 3,585 m

                • Trekking: Approximately 7 to 8 hours

                • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

                • Highlights: Rhododendron forests, open mountain terrain and views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range

This is the most challenging day of the trip. You start around 4:00 AM with your headlamp for the early morning hike to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint at 4,200 m, timed to reach the top for sunrise. On a clear morning, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Mardi Himal glow in the first light. From the viewpoint, you continue toward Mardi Himal Base Camp at up to 4,500 m, then return to High Camp for lunch. After lunch, you descend to Badal Danda at 3,210 m, or to Middle Camp, for the night. Altogether the day takes about 10 to 11 hours. Expect freezing temperatures, strong winds and challenging high altitude conditions, and follow your guide’s instructions closely, especially on the exposed ridge.

                  • Route: High Camp to Mardi Himal Viewpoint to Mardi Himal Base Camp, back to High Camp, then down to Badal Danda

                  • Altitude: Viewpoint 4,200 m, Base Camp up to 4,500 m, overnight at 3,210 m

                  • Highlights: Sunrise over the Himalayan peaks, Mardi Himal Base Camp and a long descent to Badal Danda

After the big day, today is much lighter. You descend through scenic hills and forest trails to Siding, the finishing point of your trek, in about 3 hours. A 4WD vehicle then takes you to Pokhara, a drive of around 2 hours depending on road conditions. Check in to your 4 star hotel, enjoy a hot shower and rest. Trip Information

                          Know Before You Book

                          • Visa Requirements: For this trip, you will need to apply for a 15 day Nepal visa, which comfortably covers your stay. All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travelers can get a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The 15 day tourist visa fee is USD 30. You can apply and pay online in advance here: https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/. We recommend completing the online application ahead of time to save time at the airport.

                          • Passport Validity: Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                          • Fitness Level: This is a long and demanding trek. You walk for 9 days, with several days of 7 to 11 hours, and you reach two base camps above 4,000 m: Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m and Mardi Himal Base Camp at up to 4,500 m. Travelers should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking for many hours a day on steep forest trails and at altitude. Previous trekking experience is helpful, and regular hiking practice for several weeks before the trip is strongly recommended.

                          • Permits: Permits: The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), issued by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), is required for this trek and costs NPR 3,000 per person. Both Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal lie inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, so this one permit covers the whole route. We arrange and pay for it as part of your package. Permit fees are set by the authorities and may change.

                          • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude trekking up to 4,500 m, emergency evacuation and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek.

                          • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR and GBP. Please carry enough Nepali Rupees in cash, in small notes, for personal expenses on the trail such as drinks, snacks and tips.

                          Accommodations, Meals and Transportation

                          • Typical Accommodation Used: You will stay in comfortable 4 star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara. During the trek, you will stay in mountain lodges, which offer simple rooms and shared dining areas where meals are served. Rooms in the high sections, such as Annapurna Base Camp and High Camp, are basic and can be very cold at night.

                          • Meals: A welcome dinner and a farewell dinner are included in Kathmandu. Daily breakfast is included in Kathmandu and Pokhara. On the trekking days, full board meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. Other lunches and dinners in Kathmandu and Pokhara are not included.

                          • Guide Support: An experienced English speaking trekking guide accompanies you throughout the trek, assisting with navigation, permits, lodge arrangements and the early morning hike to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint and Base Camp.

                          • Transportation: This package includes airport pickup and drop in Kathmandu, domestic flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara as scheduled, a private road transfer from Pokhara to Jhinu Danda, a 4WD transfer from Siding to Pokhara, and hotel transfers in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Our team coordinates ground transportation throughout the journey. All movement between villages on the trekking days is done on foot.

                          Seasonal and Weather Updates

                          • Autumn (September to November): One of the best seasons for this trek, with generally clear and stable weather and good visibility for mountain views. Mornings and nights at Annapurna Base Camp and High Camp can be very cold.

                          • Spring (March to May): Another favorable season, with milder temperatures at lower elevations and rhododendron forests in bloom along the trail.

                          • Other Seasons: Monsoon rain from June to August and winter cold and snow from December to February can make the trails wetter, colder and more difficult, so autumn and spring are recommended for this itinerary.

                          Health and Safety

                          • Altitude: The trek reaches 4,130 m at Annapurna Base Camp, 4,200 m at the Mardi Himal Viewpoint and up to 4,500 m at Mardi Himal Base Camp. Please be aware of the signs of altitude sickness, such as headache, nausea and unusual tiredness, and tell your guide about any symptoms promptly.

                          • Demanding Days: Day 3, from Sinuwa to Deurali, can take 8 to 10 hours. Day 9 is the most challenging day, with 10 to 11 hours of walking at altitude. Pace yourself and tell your guide about any discomfort.

                          • Cold Conditions: Night temperatures at Annapurna Base Camp may fall below freezing, and conditions can be colder with wind chill. On Day 9, expect freezing temperatures and strong winds.

                          Trip Preparations
                          • Does this trek reach both Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp?

Yes. You reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m on Day 4 and Mardi Himal Base Camp at up to 4,500 m on Day 9, along with the Mardi Himal Viewpoint at 4,200 m.

                          • Day 9 is the most challenging. You start around 4:00 AM for the Mardi Himal Viewpoint and Mardi Himal Base Camp, return to High Camp for lunch and then descend to Badal Danda, with about 10 to 11 hours of walking in total. Day 3, from Sinuwa to Deurali, is also demanding and may take around 8 to 10 hours.

                          • This is a long and demanding itinerary, so it suits trekkers with good fitness and some experience of multi day walking. If you are new to trekking, prepare well with regular hiking practice before you arrive.

                          • Yes. You need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), which costs NPR 3,000 per person. It is included in your package, and we arrange it for you.

                          • Yes. A welcome dinner and a farewell dinner are included in Kathmandu. Daily breakfast is included in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and full board meals are included on the trekking days.

                          • Night temperatures may fall below freezing, and conditions can be colder with wind chill. Bring warm layers, a warm hat and gloves.

                          • On Day 6, if time permits, you can visit the natural hot springs near Jhinu Danda.

                          • Your guide will check conditions before setting out for the Mardi Himal Viewpoint. In strong wind or poor weather, the timing may be adjusted or the walk shortened for your safety.
