Key Destination You Will Visit on the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek

Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo Village

Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake in Nepal, located at an altitude of about 3,611 m, and one of the most beautiful highlights of the Upper Dolpo trek. Its clear turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and peaceful surroundings make it a memorable place to visit. Before reaching the lake, you pass Phoksundo Waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Nepal, and the traditional village of Ringmo at about 3,600 m, with its stone houses, mani walls, and small Bon monastery. You spend two nights here on Day 7 and Day 8, giving you a full day to walk along the lake shore, explore Ringmo Village, or climb to a viewpoint for beautiful views of Phoksundo Lake.

Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain

Shey Gompa is located at an altitude of about 4,500 m, beyond Kang La Pass, in one of the most remote parts of the Upper Dolpo trek. The historic red walled monastery is several centuries old and belongs to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Behind the monastery stands Crystal Mountain, a sacred peak covered with natural quartz formations. Local people walk around the mountain as part of an important pilgrimage. Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain are also connected with Peter Matthiessen and George Schaller, who travelled through this region while researching The Snow Leopard. Shey Gompa remains an important spiritual centre of Dolpo. You arrive here on Day 11 and spend Day 12 resting and exploring the area.

Saldang and the Nankhang Valley

Saldang is the largest village in Upper Dolpo, located at an altitude of about 3,620 m. The village has traditional whitewashed houses and barley fields spread across the dry hills above the Nankhang Khola. Local families live here throughout the year, growing barley and buckwheat during the short summer season and raising yaks and goats in the high pastures. Saldang has a school, health post, and monastery, making it one of the best places to experience the traditional lifestyle and daily life of the Dolpo people. Walking through Saldang and the Nankhang Valley gives you a chance to see local culture, farming, and mountain life in one of Nepal’s most remote regions.

Yangze Gompa

Yangze Gompa is an ancient Bon monastery located on a hillside above the Nankhang Valley at an altitude of about 4,960 m. Bon is an ancient spiritual tradition that existed in Tibet before Buddhism became established there. At Yangze Gompa, you can learn about Bon traditions and see how followers walk around sacred shrines in a counterclockwise direction. The monastery is home to old murals, thangkas, and traditional religious objects, with a small group of monks living nearby. Because of its remote location, very few foreign tourists visit Yangze Gompa each year, making it a special place to experience the ancient culture and spirituality of Dolpo.

Dho Tarap and the Tarap Valley

Dho Tarap is located at an altitude of about 4,090 m in a wide and beautiful valley. After crossing the high mountain passes, the open Tarap Valley feels peaceful and welcoming. Dho Tarap is one of the highest permanent settlements in the world. It is also special because Bon and Buddhist families live together in the same village, with separate monasteries located within walking distance of each other. The local people are known as Dolpo pa and traditionally wear warm woollen clothes and continue to raise yaks and other livestock. Your rest day on Day 20 gives you time to visit both monasteries, explore the village, and walk through the surrounding fields.

Unique Culture and Lifestyle of Dolpo

The people of Dolpo, known as Dolpo pa, are of Tibetan origin and have lived in these valleys for roughly a thousand years. They speak a Tibetan dialect and live in traditional stone houses with flat roofs built along the hillsides. During the short summer growing season, they grow barley, buckwheat, and potatoes. Yaks, dzo, and goats are also an important part of daily life, providing milk, wool, transport, and support for farming and trade. For centuries, Dolpo was known for its salt trade, with local families carrying grain from Nepal to Tibet and bringing salt back from Tibet. Although this traditional trade has declined, some families still follow the old routes to move livestock and goods.

Religious life here follows two traditions. Tibetan Buddhism is practiced at monasteries such as Shey Gompa, while the older Bon religion survives at Yangze Gompa and in parts of Dho Tarap, making Dolpo one of the last strongholds of Bon anywhere. In daily life the two sit comfortably together, with prayer flags, chortens, and mani walls marking every pass and village entrance. Winters in Dolpo are long and very cold, so many families move to lower areas or Kathmandu between November and March, which is part of why the trekking season here runs from late spring through autumn.

Altitude and Activities

The trek begins in Kathmandu at 1,400 m before flying to Nepalgunj at 150 m and on to Juphal at 2,500 m, the starting point for walking. From Juphal, the trail climbs step by step through Dunai, Ankhe, and Sulighat to reach Phoksundo Lake at 3,612 m, with a rest day before the route pushes higher. The trail then climbs through remote high country over Kang La Pass at 5,306 m to Shey Gompa at 4,500 m, followed by a second rest day. From Shey Gompa, the route continues over Saldang La Pass at 5,200 m to Saldang, then through Yangze Gompa and Sibu before crossing Jeng La Pass at 5,100 m to Tokyu Gaon and Dho Tarap at 4,090 m, where a third rest day is scheduled. The trail then drops steadily through the Tarap Khola valley back to Tarakot, Dunai, and Juphal, from where you fly back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal. Once you land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our representative will meet you right outside the arrival terminal holding a board with our company name and logo. They will take you to your hotel, where you can check in and rest after your flight. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or walk around nearby. In the evening, our guide will meet you for a briefing about the trek, followed by a welcome dinner where you can meet the rest of your group.

  • Route: Tribhuvan International Airport to Hotel in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,400 m

  • Accommodation: 4 star hotel

  • Meals: Welcome Dinner

  • Highlights: Arrival in Nepal, airport transfer, hotel check in, and trek briefing

Today your guide and our office team will complete the paperwork for your Upper Dolpo restricted area permit and your Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit. This work is done through our trekking agency and the government offices in Kathmandu, and you may need to hand over your passport copies and photos for this process. Once the permit process is underway, you will visit some of Kathmandu's famous cultural and historical sites, including Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Boudhanath Stupa. You will also have time to check your trekking gear and buy anything you may still need before the trek.

    • Route: Permit offices and sightseeing around Kathmandu

    • Altitude: 1,400 m

    • Accommodation: 4 star hotel

    • Meals: Breakfast and dinner

    • Highlights: Restricted area permit processing, Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and final gear check

You will take a short domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a city in the flat Terai region near the border with India. Nepalgunj is simply a stop on the way to the mountains, since the flight to Juphal leaves from here. You will notice the weather is warmer and more humid than in Kathmandu. The rest of the day is free at your hotel.

      • Route: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj by domestic flight

      • Altitude: 150 m

      • Accommodation: Hotel

      • Meals: Breakfast and dinner

      • Highlights: Domestic flight to the Terai lowlands, overnight stop before the flight to Juphal

An early morning flight takes you from Nepalgunj into the mountains, landing on the small airstrip at Juphal. This is where the real trekking begins. From Juphal, the trail drops down and follows a path above the Thuli Bheri River. The walk today is short and gentle, giving you time to settle in after two flights. You will reach Dunai, the main town of the Dolpa district, by the afternoon.

        • Route: Nepalgunj to Juphal by domestic flight, then trek to Dunai

        • Altitude: 2,500 m at Juphal, dropping to 2,850 m at Dunai

        • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

        • Highlights: Mountain flight into Juphal, first day of trekking, arrival in Dunai

Leaving Dunai, the trail follows the Thuli Bheri River before turning to follow the Phoksundo Khola upstream. You will walk through a mix of forest and open riverbank, with a few narrow sections cut into the hillside above the water. Ankhe is a small settlement where the trail starts to climb more clearly into Shey Phoksundo National Park.

          • Route: Dunai to Ankhe along the Phoksundo Khola

          • Altitude: 2,896 m

          • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

          • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

          • Highlights: Walking beside the Phoksundo Khola, entering Shey Phoksundo National Park

Today the trail climbs through forested hillside above the Phoksundo Khola. The valley narrows as you go, and some parts of the path are cut into steep ground above the river, so a steady pace matters more than speed. Sulighat is a simple, quiet stop set in a more remote stretch of the valley.

            • Route: Ankhe to Sulighat through forested hillside trail

            • Altitude: 3,180 m

            • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

            • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

            • Highlights: Forested trail above the Phoksundo Khola, increasingly quiet surroundings

The trail keeps climbing up the valley, and near Ringmo village the view suddenly opens up to reveal Phoksundo Lake. The lake is famous for its deep turquoise color, set against cliffs, forest, and distant peaks inside Shey Phoksundo National Park. You will spend two nights here, with the next day set aside for rest.

              • Route: Sulighat to Phoksundo Lake via Ringmo village

              • Altitude: 3,612 m

              • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

              • Highlights: Arrival at Phoksundo Lake, first close views of the lake and cliffs, Ringmo village

This is a full rest day at Phoksundo Lake, planned to help your body get used to the altitude before the climb toward Kang La Pass. It is better not to spend the whole day in bed. A short, easy walk along the lake shore or up to a nearby viewpoint helps your body adjust faster. Many trekkers also use the day to visit the small monastery near Ringmo village.

                • Route: Acclimatization day around Phoksundo Lake

                • Altitude: 3,612 m

                • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

                • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                • Highlights: Rest and acclimatization, walk along the lake shore, visiting Ringmo village

Leaving the lake, the trail follows the Phoksundo Khola further upstream into quieter, more remote terrain. Trees start to thin out as you gain height, and the landscape slowly turns more open and rocky. This camp marks your entry into the high route toward Shey Gompa.

                  • Route: Phoksundo Lake to Phoksundo Khola Camp

                  • Altitude: 3,507 m

                  • Accommodation: Camping tent

                  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                  • Highlights: Entering the remote upper valley, thinning tree line, quiet riverside camp

The trail continues to climb through bare, high altitude ground as you get closer to the base of Kang La Pass. The walking itself is not technical, but the thin air makes the pace slower than at lower elevations, so plan for a full, steady day.

                    • Route: Phoksundo Khola Camp to Phoksundo Bhanjyang

                    • Altitude: 3,910 m

                    • Accommodation: Camping tent

                    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                    • Highlights: Approaching the high alpine zone, preparation for the Kang La Pass crossing

This is one of the hardest days of the trek, crossing Kang La Pass at 5,306 m. You will start early, since the trail is easier to walk while the ground is still frozen and firm. From the top of the pass, you can see across the wide, high Dolpo landscape on a clear day. After a short rest, the trail drops down toward Shey Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery linked to the nearby sacred Crystal Mountain.

                      • Route: Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa via Kang La Pass

                      • Altitude: 5,306 m at the pass, dropping to 4,500 m at Shey Gompa

                      • Accommodation: Camping tent

                      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                      • Highlights: Crossing Kang La Pass, arrival at Shey Gompa monastery

Today is a full rest day at Shey Gompa, giving your body time to recover before continuing toward Saldang La Pass. The monastery itself is worth spending time at, and a short walk in the surrounding hills is a good way to aid your acclimatization instead of resting all day in your tent or room.

                        • Route: Acclimatization day around Shey Gompa

                        • Altitude: 4,500 m

                        • Accommodation: Camping tent

                        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                        • Highlights: Rest and acclimatization, exploring Shey Gompa monastery

The trail leaves Shey Gompa and crosses open, high altitude pasture land on the way to Namduna Gaun. The land here is dry and windswept, which is typical of high Dolpo, and the walking gives wide views across the surrounding hills for most of the day.

                          • Route: Shey Gompa to Namduna Gaun

                          • Altitude: 4,430 m

                          • Highlights: Walking through open high altitude pasture, wide views of remote Dolpo

Today you will cross Saldang La Pass at 5,200 m before dropping down into the Nankhang valley toward Saldang, the largest village in Upper Dolpo. As you descend, you will start to see terraced fields and scattered stone houses that reflect the Tibetan style farming life of this part of the region.

                            • Route: Namduna Gaun to Saldang via Saldang La Pass

                            • Altitude: 5,200 m at the pass, dropping to 3,620 m at Saldang

                            • Highlights: Crossing Saldang La Pass, arrival in Saldang, the largest village in Upper Dolpo

From Saldang, the trail follows the Nankhang valley toward Yangze Gompa, one of the oldest Bon monasteries in the Dolpo region, built on a hillside above the valley floor. Along the way, you get a good look at everyday life in the small Dolpo villages you pass.

                              • Route: Saldang to Yangze Gompa along the Nankhang valley

                              • Altitude: 4,960 m

The trail continues along the upper valley toward Sibu, a small stop in a quiet and remote stretch of the route. The walking today is steady, moving through the dry, high altitude ground typical of this part of Dolpo.

                                • Route: Yangze Gompa to Sibu

                                • Altitude: 4,560 m

Today's walk is shorter, bringing you to Jeng La Phedi, the base camp for tomorrow's crossing of Jeng La Pass. This shorter day gives your body time to rest before the demanding pass crossing ahead.

                                  • Route: Sibu to Jeng La Phedi

                                  • Altitude: 4,900 m

                                  • Accommodation: Camping tent

                                  • Highlights: Arrival at the base of Jeng La Pass, preparation for the crossing

An early start takes you up to Jeng La Pass at 5,100 m, the last of the major high passes on this trek. From the top, you can look back across the Dolpo landscape you have already crossed. The trail then drops into the Tarap valley toward Tokyu Gaon, a small village that marks your entry into the lower Tarap region.

                                    • Route: Jeng La Phedi to Tokyu Gaon via Jeng La Pass

The trail follows the widening Tarap valley down to Dho Tarap, a settlement home to both Bon and Buddhist families. The valley here feels noticeably broader and more settled than the terrain you crossed over the past several days.

                                      • Route: Tokyu Gaon to Dho Tarap

                                      • Altitude: 4,090 m

                                      • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

Today is a rest day in Dho Tarap, the last of the three acclimatization days on this trip. It is a good chance to explore the village and its small gompas, do some laundry, and rest your legs before the multi day walk down toward Tarakot.

                                        • Route: Acclimatization day around Dho Tarap

                                        • Altitude: 4,090 m

                                        • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

                                        • Highlights: Rest day, exploring Dho Tarap village and its monasteries

Leaving Dho Tarap, the trail follows the Tarap Khola downstream, starting the long walk back toward Tarakot and Dunai. The river stays close to the path for most of the day as the valley slowly begins to narrow.

                                          • Route: Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola

                                          • Altitude: 3,800 m

                                          • Accommodation: Teahouse or camping tent

                                          • Highlights: Beginning the descent along the Tarap Khola

The trail keeps following the valley down toward Khani Gaon, with the path becoming narrow in a few places where the river cuts through the hills. This is one of the longer walking days on the way back, since the route loses a fair amount of height.

                                            • Route: Tarap Khola to Khani Gaon

                                            • Highlights: Descending through the narrowing Tarap valley

Today's trail keeps dropping toward Tarakot, a village near where the Tarap valley meets the wider Bheri valley. As you lose height, the surroundings turn greener and warmer than the high country you have left behind.

                                              • Route: Khani Gaon to Tarakot

                                              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                                              • Highlights: Descending toward the Bheri valley, arrival in Tarakot

The trail follows the Bheri valley back toward Dunai, covering some of the same ground you walked on Day 4 and Day 5. This is an easier day compared to the high pass crossings earlier in the trip.

                                                • Highlights: Return walk along the Bheri valley, arrival back in Dunai

Your final trekking day retraces the route from Dunai back to Juphal, where the walking part of the trip began. This short walk brings the trekking section to a close, ready for the flight out the next morning.

                                                  • Highlights: Final trekking day, arrival back at the Juphal airstrip

An early flight takes you from Juphal back to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight the same day to Kathmandu. Mountain flights in this region can sometimes be delayed by weather, so it is wise to keep the day flexible if possible. You will spend the evening back in your Kathmandu hotel.

                                                    • Route: Juphal to Nepalgunj to Kathmandu by domestic flight

Today is a free day in Kathmandu to rest after your trek, do laundry, shop for souvenirs, or explore more of the city. You can visit Pashupatinath Temple, Thamel, or the Garden of Dreams, depending on your interests and available time. This day also provides a useful buffer in case of flight delays earlier in the trip. In the evening, the group will gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek.

                                                          Trip Information

                                                          Know Before You Book

                                                          • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. For this 28 day trip, a 30 day tourist visa is sufficient and costs USD 50. You can apply and pay online in advance at https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                                                          • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page free for your visa stamp.

                                                          • Restricted Area Permit: Upper Dolpo is a government restricted area. Trekking here requires three permits: the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 for the first 10 days, then USD 50 per extra day), two Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permits (USD 20 per week each, for entry and exit), and the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit (about USD 25). These are arranged by our agency through the Department of Immigration, and a licensed guide must be with you at all times. Since fees are reviewed periodically by the Nepal government, please confirm the current cost with our office when you book. Permit details:https://immigration.gov.np/trekking-route-and-permit-fee

Fitness Level: This trek crosses several passes above 5,000 m over almost three weeks of continuous walking in a very remote setting. You should have excellent fitness and previous experience with multi day high altitude trekking before joining this trip.

                                                          • Flight Reliability: Flights to and from Juphal depend on clear weather and can be delayed at short notice. We recommend building some flexible days into your travel plans, especially around Day 4 and Day 26.

                                                          • Group and Guide Requirements: A licensed guide is required throughout the Upper Dolpo region, and additional local rules may apply regarding group size and registration, which our agency will manage on your behalf.

                                                          • Travel Insurance: Since this region is very remote with limited medical support, travel insurance that covers high altitude evacuation, medical emergencies, and trip delays is strongly recommended.

                                                          • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payment in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP. Please carry enough Nepali Rupees for your personal spending, since there are no ATMs or banks once you leave Nepalgunj.

                                                          Accommodations, Meals and Transportation

                                                          • Typical Accommodation Used: You will stay in a comfortable 4 star hotel in Kathmandu before and after the trek. During the trekking days, you will stay in teahouses where they exist along the route and in camping tents with a full support crew in the more remote parts of Dolpo where teahouses are not available.

                                                          • Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included on all your Kathmandu and Nepalgunj days, with lunch left free for you to arrange, since these are sightseeing, permit, or rest days. A welcome dinner is included on Day 1, and a farewell dinner is included near the end of your trip. During the trek, all three meals are included every day, cooked fresh on site by our dedicated kitchen crew on the camping sections.

                                                          • Guide Support: An experienced licensed guide travels with you for the whole trek, handling permits, route finding, and acclimatization, including all of the pass crossings. Porters carry the group and camping equipment, and a separate cook and kitchen team manage meals on the camping sections of the route.

                                                          • Transportation: This package includes private airport transfers in Kathmandu, a domestic flight between Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, and a domestic flight between Nepalgunj and Juphal, along with the return sector at the end of the trek. All movement through the Dolpo region itself is done on foot.

                                                          Seasonal and Weather Updates

                                                          • Late Spring (May to June): This period can offer good conditions for the pass crossings once the winter snow has melted, with milder temperatures at the lower elevations of the route.

                                                          • Summer and Monsoon (July to August): Dolpo sits in the rain shadow of the main Himalayan range, so it gets much less monsoon rain than most of Nepal, though trail and pass conditions should still be checked closely during this period.

                                                          • Autumn (September to October): This is generally seen as a favourable season for Upper Dolpo, with more settled weather for the pass crossings, although nights at high camps remain very cold.

                                                          • General Wellbeing: This trek spends a long stretch of time above 3,500 m and crosses three high mountain passes above 5,000 m: Kang La Pass at 5,306 m, Saldang La Pass at 5,200 m, and Jeng La Pass at 5,100 m. You should know the signs of altitude sickness and tell your guide immediately if you notice any symptoms.

                                                          • Healthcare Facilities: Medical care inside the Dolpo region is very limited, with only basic health posts in the larger villages. Full hospital care is available in Nepalgunj and Kathmandu. Your guide carries a basic first aid kit and can arrange emergency evacuation if it is needed.

                                                          • Pacing: The three rest days built into this trip, at Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, and Dho Tarap, are an important part of adjusting safely to the altitude before and after the highest passes.

                                                          • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids on every trekking day, and especially on the days when you cross a pass.

                                                          • Weather Awareness: Weather at the high passes can change fast. Always follow your guide's instructions about the timing of pass crossings and any changes to the day's plan.

                                                          • Essential Clothing: Warm, layered clothing suitable for many days at high altitude, including a good down jacket for cold mornings, evenings, and the pass crossings.

                                                          • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots with strong ankle support and good grip, able to handle many days of walking on varied and high altitude ground, including the passes.

                                                          Important Notices

                                                          • Travel Advisories: Please check the latest travel advice from your home country before you travel. Our team can share local updates closer to your trip date.

                                                          • Remote Terrain: This trek passes through some of the most remote parts of Nepal, with very few shops, no ATM facilities, and limited phone or internet coverage once you leave Nepalgunj. Please carry enough cash for the full trekking part of your trip.

                                                          • Responsible Travel: Please respect local customs, ask before photographing monks or local families, and support the local economy of the Dolpo region during your visit.

                                                          • What is the highest point of the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek?

The highest point is Kang La Pass at 5,306 m, crossed on Day 11 of this itinerary.

                                                          • Both. Teahouses are used where they are available, and camping with a full cook and kitchen crew is used in the more remote parts of Dolpo where teahouse facilities are limited.

                                                          • Yes. Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, so you need a restricted area permit from the Department of Immigration along with a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, both arranged through a licensed trekking agency, and a licensed guide must travel with you at all times.

                                                          • Three rest days are included, at Phoksundo Lake on Day 8, at Shey Gompa on Day 12, and at Dho Tarap on Day 20.

                                                          • Juphal is the main gateway for the Upper Dolpo trek. Most trekkers fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then take a short flight to Juphal. Although roads have reached parts of the Dolpa region, travelling by road is long, rough, and can be affected by weather and road conditions. Flying to Juphal is therefore the fastest and most practical way to reach the starting point of the Upper Dolpo trek.

                                                          • Yes. The trail reaches Phoksundo Lake on Day 7 with a rest day the next day, and reaches Shey Gompa on Day 11 after crossing Kang La Pass, with a further rest day on Day 12.
