Why You Will Love This Trip

  • Tibet, Nepal and India in One Buddhist Journey: In 16 days, you follow the story of Buddhism from the high plateau of Tibet to the places where the Buddha was born, taught and found enlightenment. You start with Tibetan Buddhism in Lhasa, see Buddhist and Hindu traditions in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and then visit Lumbini, Sarnath and Bodhgaya. Each stop adds a new chapter to the same story, and the route is planned in a clear order from Day 1 to Day 16.

  • Potala Palace in Lhasa: The Potala Palace is the symbol of Tibet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands on Marpo Ri, the Red Hill, above Lhasa, and was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. You visit the White Palace, where the Dalai Lamas lived and worked, and the Red Palace, which holds chapels and the golden tombs of past Dalai Lamas. Entrance fees are included, and your guide manages the timed entry.

  • Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street: Jokhang Temple is the most sacred Buddhist temple in Tibet and holds the Jowo Shakyamuni statue of the Buddha. Outside, pilgrims bow to the ground and walk clockwise around Barkhor Street, spinning prayer wheels. The street is full of small shops that sell prayer flags, incense, and Tibetan jewelry, so it is a good place to see daily Tibetan life.

  • Drepung and Sera Monasteries: Drepung Monastery, founded in 1416, was once one of the largest and most important monasteries in Tibet, and its white buildings are stacked up a hillside on the western edge of Lhasa. Sera Monastery, founded in 1419, is famous for its debates, where monks argue Buddhist philosophy in pairs in the courtyard. The afternoon of Day 3 is free, so you can return to Barkhor Street at your own pace.

  • Scenic Himalayan Flights: Enjoy four flights during the tour: Lhasa to Kathmandu, Kathmandu to Pokhara, Pokhara to Bhairahawa, and Gaya to Delhi. On a clear day, the flight from Lhasa to Kathmandu crosses the Himalayas and gives views of snow peaks. The short flight to Pokhara also gives mountain views, and the flights save you many hours of road travel.

  • Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Sites: In one day, you visit Swayambhunath Stupa on its hilltop, Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati River and Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. Swayambhunath gives wide views over the valley, and Boudhanath is the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. All three are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the entrance fees are included.

  • Pokhara and Phewa Lake: Pokhara is a relaxed lakeside city with a very different feeling from Kathmandu. You take a boat ride on Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple, which stands on an island in the lake. On clear days, you see the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre, also called Fishtail Mountain. The next day, you visit the World Peace Pagoda on Anadu Hill, the International Mountain Museum, Devi's Fall and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave.

  • Lumbini, Birthplace of the Buddha: Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important pilgrimage places in the Buddhist world. You spend two nights here and visit the Maya Devi Temple, the Sacred Garden with the Puskarini pond, and the Ashokan Pillar set up by Emperor Ashoka. In the international monastic zone, you see monasteries built by different Buddhist countries, such as the Myanmar Golden Temple, the Royal Thai Monastery, and the Great Drigung Kagyud Lotus Stupa.

  • Varanasi Ganges Boat Ride and Ganga Aarti: Varanasi is one of the oldest living cities in India. You take an included sunrise boat ride on the Ganges and watch people bathe, pray, and make offerings at Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat. If time permits on Day 10, you can also see the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, with fire lamps, bells, and chanting.

  • Sarnath and Dhamek Stupa: Sarnath is about 10 km from Varanasi and is where the Buddha is traditionally believed to have given his first sermon. You visit Dhamek Stupa, the Deer Park area, and the ruins of old monasteries and stupas in the archaeological area. Together with Lumbini and Bodhgaya, it completes the main Buddhist places of the Buddha's life.

  • Bodhgaya and the Mahabodhi Temple: The Mahabodhi Temple Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands beside the sacred Bodhi Tree, which is traditionally linked to the Buddha's enlightenment. You also see Vajrasana, the stone seat where the Buddha is believed to have meditated, and the monasteries of different countries, including the Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple, the Thai Temple, and the Bhutanese Monastery. With a full day here, you have time for quiet reflection or evening prayers with pilgrims.

  • Delhi to Finish the Journey: You end the trip with a half day in Delhi. Visit India Gate, Humayun's Tomb and the outside of the Parliament House on Raisina Hill, or choose Old Delhi with Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk. You stay in a 5 star hotel, so the last two nights are comfortable before your flight home.

  • Comfortable and Well Planned Trip: You stay in 3 star hotels in Lhasa, Varanasi, and Bodhgaya, 4 star hotels in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Lumbini, and a 5 star hotel in Delhi. Breakfast is included every day. Thamel Travels and Tours arranges your Tibet Travel Permit, all private transfers and drives, four flights, a licensed guide, and all entrance fees. Lunch and dinner are not included, so you can choose local restaurants and try the food of each place.

Altitude and Activities

Itinerary

Welcome to Tibet! After you land at Lhasa Gonggar Airport, your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel in Lhasa. The drive from the airport takes about 1 hour. Lhasa is at about 3,650 m, so the rest of the day is kept free for rest and acclimatization. Avoid strenuous activity, walk slowly, and drink plenty of water. The local greeting is "Tashi Delek," which means good luck and blessings.

  • Route: Lhasa Gonggar Airport to hotel in Lhasa

  • Altitude: About 3,650 m

  • Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel in Lhasa

  • Meals: None included

  • Highlights: Arrival in Tibet, hotel transfer, rest, and acclimatization

After breakfast, you visit the Potala Palace, the most famous landmark of Tibet. It stands on Marpo Ri, also called Red Hill, above the city and was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. The palace has two main parts: the White Palace, where the Dalai Lamas lived and worked, and the Red Palace, which holds chapels and the golden tombs of past Dalai Lamas. You climb many steps inside, so walk slowly. Entry is timed, and your guide will manage the schedule.

Next, you visit Jokhang Temple, the most sacred Buddhist temple in Tibet. It stands in the old city and holds the Jowo Shakyamuni statue of the Buddha. Outside the temple, you often see pilgrims bowing fully to the ground in prayer. After the temple, you walk around Barkhor Square and the Barkhor Street circuit, where pilgrims walk clockwise around the Jokhang. The street is lined with small shops that sell prayer flags, prayer wheels, incense, and Tibetan jewelry.

    • Route: Hotel to Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Square

    • Altitude: About 3,650 m in Lhasa

    • Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel in Lhasa

    • Meals: Breakfast

    • Highlights: Potala Palace, White Palace, Red Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Square, old city streets

In the morning, you visit Drepung Monastery, on a hillside on the western edge of Lhasa. It was founded in 1416 and was once one of the largest and most important monasteries in Tibet. Its white buildings are stacked up the hill, and you see the large assembly hall and the old prayer rooms.

You then drive to Sera Monastery, in the north of Lhasa. It was founded in 1419 and belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is famous for its debates, where monks argue Buddhist philosophy in pairs in the courtyard, clapping their hands and using loud gestures to make a point. Debate timing can change, so your guide will confirm the plan on the day.

The afternoon is relaxed. You can rest at the hotel or return to Barkhor Street and the old city to shop and walk at your own pace.

      • Route: Hotel to Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

      • Altitude: About 3,650 m

      • Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel in Lhasa

After breakfast, you transfer to Lhasa Gonggar Airport for your flight to Kathmandu. The flight crosses the Himalayas, and on a clear day you can see snow peaks from the window. You land at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Kathmandu. Kathmandu is at about 1,400 m, so the air feels warmer and easier to breathe after Lhasa.

Later in the day, take a gentle walk around Thamel, the busy tourist area in the north of central Kathmandu. It has many shops, cafes, and restaurants. You can also simply rest at the hotel after the flight.

        • Highlights: Himalayan flight views, arrival in Nepal, Thamel walk

After breakfast, you visit three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. First is Swayambhunath Stupa, on a hill in the west of the city. The white dome is painted with the watchful eyes of the Buddha, and prayer flags and prayer wheels fill the grounds. Monkeys live around the stupa, so it is also called the Monkey Temple. From the top, you get wide views over the valley.

Next, you visit Pashupatinath Temple, the most important Hindu temple of Lord Shiva in Nepal, on the banks of the Bagmati River in the east of Kathmandu. Only Hindus can enter the main temple, but you can see the golden roof, the riverside ghats and the many small shrines from the opposite bank.

Depending on the time, you end the day at Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and an important centre of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Walk clockwise around it like the local people, past prayer wheels and butter lamps, with Tibetan monasteries and shops around the square.

After breakfast, you take a morning flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The flight is short and scenic, and on a clear day you can see the Himalayan range from the window. After you check in at your hotel, you spend a relaxed afternoon in the Lakeside area, the main tourist street along the shore of Phewa Lake.

In the afternoon, you take a boat ride on Phewa Lake, which is included in your package. The calm water gives you views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre, also called Fishtail Mountain. The boat ride also takes you to Tal Barahi Temple, a small Hindu temple on an island in the lake.

            • Route: Kathmandu to Pokhara by flight, then Lakeside and Phewa Lake

You begin the day at the World Peace Pagoda, also called Shanti Stupa, on Anadu Hill on the south side of Phewa Lake. It is a white Buddhist stupa with wide views over the lake and the Annapurna region.

You then visit the International Mountain Museum in the Ratopahira area, which tells the story of the world's great mountains and the people and cultures of the Himalaya. After that, you visit Devi's Fall in the Chorepatan area, a waterfall where the stream disappears into a deep underground tunnel. You then continue to the international monastic zone, where monasteries and temples built by different Buddhist countries and traditions stand side by side. Examples include the Myanmar Golden Temple, the Royal Thai Monastery, and the Great Drigung Kagyud Lotus Stupa. Each one shows its own style of art and architecture. Start early with a traditional boat ride on the Ganges, which is included in your package. You watch the morning rituals along the ghats, where people bathe, pray and make offerings as the sun rises. The ghats you see include Dashashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat, and you pass Manikarnika Ghat, the main cremation ghat, from the river.

Return to the hotel for breakfast, then explore the Old City of Varanasi, with its narrow lanes, small shops, and important temples such as Kashi Vishwanath Temple, depending on crowds and security rules.

These include the Great Buddha Statue, the Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple, the Thai Temple, and the Bhutanese Monastery, each with its own style of art and design. The afternoon is peaceful, with time for meditation, quiet reflection, or another visit to the Mahabodhi Temple.

                                  • Tibet Travel Permit: Foreign travelers cannot enter Tibet independently. A Tibet Travel Permit is required. Thamel Travels and Tours arranges the permit for you, and the permit fee is already included in your tour package price, so you pay nothing extra for it. We need a clear copy of your passport well in advance, as the process takes time.

                                  • Chinese Visa: Because this trip begins in Lhasa, you need a Chinese visa before you travel. Please check the requirements with the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

                                  • Nepal Visa: Most nationalities can get a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You are in Nepal from Day 4 to Day 10, so a 15 day tourist visa at USD 30 is suitable. You can also apply and pay online in advance here: https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                                  • Indian Visa: You enter India by road at the Nepal India border on Day 10, so you need an Indian visa before you travel. An Indian e Visa is generally valid only at selected airports and seaports, so please confirm with the Indian Embassy which visa type is accepted for this land border crossing. Official visa details are at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/

                                  • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with enough blank pages for visas and entry stamps.

                                  Know Before You Book

                                  • Fitness Level: This tour is mostly cultural sightseeing with a lot of walking. Lhasa is at 3,650 m, so even short walks can feel tiring on Days 1 to 3. Potala Palace has many steps inside, and Drepung and Sera Monasteries have steps and uneven stone paths. A normal level of fitness is recommended. No technical trekking skills are needed.

                                  • Long Drives: Two days have long road journeys in a private vehicle. On Day 10, the drive from Lumbini to Varanasi is about 310 to 320 km and takes most of the day, including border formalities at Belahiya and Sunauli. On Day 12, the drive from Varanasi to Bodhgaya is about 240 to 260 km and takes around 5 to 6 hours. Road conditions and border queues can change the timing. Keep your passport and Indian visa in your bag safely.

                                  • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should cover Tibet in China, Nepal, and India and include medical emergencies, emergency evacuation, flight changes, trip cancellation, and lost baggage. Please also check that it covers altitude up to 3,650 m, as you stay in Lhasa at this height.

                                  • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR and GBP. For personal expenses, carry some local currency in each country: Chinese Yuan (CNY) in Lhasa, Nepali Rupees (NPR) in Nepal and Indian Rupees (INR) in India.

                                  Accommodation, Meals and Transportation

                                  • Typical Accommodation Used: You stay in 3 star hotels in Lhasa (3 nights), Varanasi (2 nights) and Bodhgaya (2 nights), 4 star hotels in Kathmandu (2 nights), Pokhara (2 nights) and Lumbini (2 nights), and a 5 star hotel in Delhi (2 nights).

                                  • Meals: Breakfast is included every day. Lunch and dinner are not included. Lunch and dinner are not included, allowing you to choose restaurants and local food according to your preference.

                                  • Transportation: The tour includes four flights: Lhasa to Kathmandu, Kathmandu to Pokhara, Pokhara to Bhairahawa, and Gaya to Delhi. All ground transfers and drives are private, including the road journeys from Lumbini to Varanasi and from Varanasi to Bodhgaya. The arrival flight to Lhasa and the departure flight from Delhi are not included.

                                  Seasonal and Weather Updates

                                  • Spring (March to April): Lhasa is generally dry and sunny with cold nights. Kathmandu and Pokhara are pleasant, and Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and Delhi are warm and getting hotter as April goes on.

                                  • Autumn (October to November): Autumn generally offers stable weather and clear mountain views. The monsoon rains in Nepal and India end by late September, so skies are clearer. Lhasa has cool to cold mornings and evenings, while the plains of India are comfortable for sightseeing.

                                  • Other Seasons: Summer is hot and humid in Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and Delhi, and the monsoon brings rain. Winter is very cold in Lhasa, and fog in northern India can sometimes delay flights.

                                  Health and Safety

                                  • Altitude in Lhasa: You fly straight into Lhasa at about 3,650 m. Rest on arrival, walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol on the first day. Tell your guide promptly about headaches, nausea, or breathlessness. Talk to your doctor before the trip if you have heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions.

                                  • Healthcare Facilities: Good medical facilities are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Varanasi, and Delhi. Lumbini and Bodhgaya have clinics for basic care, and larger hospitals are available in nearby Bhairahawa and Gaya. Lhasa also has hospitals, and your guide will help you get care quickly. Please carry your own personal medications and a copy of your prescriptions, and keep your travel insurance details with you.

                                  • Food and Water: Drink only bottled or filtered water in Tibet, Nepal, and India, and check that the seal is closed. Avoid ice in drinks and raw salads unless the water is safe. Choose freshly cooked hot food at clean, busy restaurants, especially in Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and Delhi. Carry hand sanitizer and use it before meals. Lunch and dinner are not included, so your guide can suggest good local restaurants.

                                  • Travel Days: Flights in the Himalayas, such as Kathmandu to Pokhara and Pokhara to Bhairahawa, can be delayed by weather. Winter fog can also delay flights in Gaya and Delhi. The long drives on Day 10 and Day 12 can run late because of traffic and the border crossing. Please keep your plans flexible on these days, and avoid booking tight onward travel on the day of your departure flight from Delhi.

                                  Packing Checklist

                                  • Essential Clothing: Layered clothing for Lhasa, including thermal base layers, a fleece or warm jacket, a warm hat, and gloves. Mornings and evenings are cold there. For Nepal and India, pack light cotton clothes that dry quickly. Add a warm layer for Kathmandu and Pokhara evenings in October to November.

                                  • Temple Dress: Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples, monasteries, stupas, and holy sites in Tibet, Nepal, and India. A light scarf or shawl is useful for Jokhang Temple, the Varanasi temples, and the Mahabodhi Temple.

                                  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes with good grip for steps and uneven stone paths. Shoes are removed at many temples, including the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, so slip on shoes and clean socks are handy. Sandals are useful in the hot plains of India.

                                  • Sun and Rain Gear: A sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm. The sun is very strong in Lhasa at 3,650 m. A light rain jacket or small umbrella is useful in Nepal and India, especially outside the dry season.

                                  • Cash: Small amounts of local currency for each country: Chinese Yuan in Lhasa, Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini, and Indian Rupees in Varanasi, Bodhgaya, and Delhi. Small notes are useful for tips, rickshaws, and small shops.

                                  • Travel Documents: Your original passport, printed visas, copies of your passport, travel insurance, and flight details. Your Tibet Travel Permit is arranged by Thamel Travels and Tours. Keep all documents in a daypack and not in checked luggage.

                                  • Electronics: Camera, phone charger, power bank and a universal travel adapter. Nepal and India use similar plug types, and China may use a different type, so a universal adapter is the safest choice.

                                  • Personal Items: Toiletries, hand sanitizer, a refillable water bottle, personal medications with copies of prescriptions, and any altitude medication your doctor advises. Wet wipes and tissues are also useful, as some public toilets may not have supplies.

                                  Important Notices

                                  • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, check the latest travel advice from your home country for China (Tibet), Nepal, and India. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                                  • Photography Rules: Photography is not allowed inside most temples, monasteries, and shrine rooms in Tibet and may be restricted at holy sites in Nepal and India. Please ask your guide before taking photos, and ask permission before photographing local people.

                                  • Border Crossing: On Day 10, you cross by road from Nepal to India at the Belahiya and Sunauli border. You need your original passport and a valid Indian visa. Keep them in your daypack, not in the luggage in the vehicle. Border offices can be busy, so allow extra time and follow your guide's instructions.

                                  • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs and dress modestly at religious sites. Walk clockwise around stupas and temples, remove your shoes where asked, and do not touch religious objects or point your feet at statues. Ask permission before photographing local people. Support the local economy by buying handicrafts from local shops, and avoid plastic waste by carrying a refillable water bottle.

                                  Trip Preparations
                                  • Do I need a visa for each country?

Yes. You need a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit for Tibet, a Nepal visa and an Indian visa. Thamel Travels and Tours arranges the Tibet Travel Permit and includes it in the package. You arrange the Chinese, Nepalese, and Indian visas yourself.

                                  • Four flights are included: Lhasa to Kathmandu, Kathmandu to Pokhara, Pokhara to Bhairahawa, and Gaya to Delhi. Your flight to Lhasa and your flight home from Delhi are not included.

                                  • Yes. All drives are in a private vehicle. The journey is about 310 to 320 km and takes most of the day, including time at the Nepal and India border.

                                  • It is possible, because you fly straight to Lhasa at 3,650 m. The first day is kept free for rest, and the sightseeing is gentle. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide at once if you have a headache, nausea, or shortness of breath. Please talk to your doctor before the trip.

                                  • Yes, if you are in normal health. The pace is easy, and there is no trekking. There are steps at the Potala Palace and the monasteries, and long drives on Day 10 and Day 12, so please check with your doctor if you have heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions.

                                  • Yes. Opening times at sites like the Potala Palace can change at short notice because of local rules. Your guide will change the order of visits where needed, so you still see the main sites.

                                  • Day 10 is a long travel day. You drive from Lumbini to the Belahiya and Sunauli border, complete the formalities, and continue to Varanasi. Please keep your passport and Indian visa in your daypack. Your guide will help you at the border.
