Trip Overview

The Everest Three Passes Trek is a demanding high altitude trek in the Khumbu region that crosses three passes, Kongma La at 5,535 m, Cho La at 5,420 m, and Renjo La at 5,360 m, while linking Everest Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and the Gokyo Lakes in one trek. Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp Trek, this route loops through the eastern, central, and western valleys of the Khumbu, offering wide views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Cho Oyu, and passes through Sherpa villages such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Thame, all within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is a serious high altitude trek, not a standard trekking holiday, recommended only for trekkers with prior high altitude experience and strong physical fitness. The repeated pass crossings and extended time spent above 4,500 m demand careful acclimatization and preparation. In return, you get one of the most complete and rewarding journeys in the Khumbu, taking in glaciers, moraine, and high alpine terrain alongside the region's deep Buddhist heritage.

                                          Trip Information

                                          Know Before You Book

                                          • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Since this is a 20 day trek and flight delays to or from Lukla can add extra days in Kathmandu, we recommend applying for a 30 day tourist visa, which costs USD 50, to give yourself a comfortable buffer around your travel dates. You can apply and pay online in advance here: https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                                          • Passport Validity: Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                                          • Fitness Level: This is a challenging trek that crosses three high passes above 5,000 m and reaches 5,555 m at Kala Patthar. Trekkers should have a strong level of fitness, and prior high altitude trekking experience is recommended, along with regular walking or hiking practice beforehand.

                                          • Lukla Flights: Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla can be affected by weather and are sometimes delayed or rescheduled. During busier periods, these flights may operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, requiring an additional road transfer of a few hours each way.

                                          • Group and Guide Requirements: Trekkers in the Khumbu region are required to trek with a licensed guide.

                                          • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude evacuation, and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek.

                                          • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP, though it is a good idea to carry some Nepali Rupees for smaller personal expenses on the trail.

                                          Accommodations, Meals and Transportation

                                          • Typical Accommodation Used: You will stay in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Kathmandu before and after the trek. During the trek, you will stay in mountain lodges and teahouses along the route, which offer simple rooms and dining halls where meals are served.

                                          • Meals: Breakfast is included in Kathmandu on your departure day, along with a welcome dinner on Day 1 and a farewell dinner on Day 19. During the trek, full board meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included at every stop from Phakding through Lukla.

                                          • Guide Support: An experienced English speaking guide accompanies you throughout the trek, assisting with permits, acclimatization, trail navigation, and the crossing of all three passes. Porters are also provided to carry your duffle bag.

                                          • Transportation: This package includes private airport transfers in Kathmandu and domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla. All movement between villages on the trek is done on foot.

                                          Seasonal and Weather Updates

                                          • Autumn (September to November): This is the most popular season for the Three Passes Trek, with generally stable weather and clear mountain views, though nights at higher altitude and around the passes are very cold.

                                          • Spring (March to May): Spring offers milder temperatures at lower elevation and blooming rhododendron forests along the lower trail, with generally good conditions for the pass crossings later in the season.

                                          Health and Safety

                                          • General Wellbeing: This trek spends extended time above 4,500 m and crosses three passes above 5,000 m. Trekkers should be aware of the signs of altitude sickness and communicate any symptoms to their guide promptly.

                                          • Healthcare Facilities: A well known high altitude medical clinic operates seasonally in the Khumbu region, and full hospital facilities are available in Kathmandu. Your guide can assist with local arrangements if required.

                                          • Pacing: Walking at a comfortable pace and following the built in acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche can help your body adjust before the pass crossings.

                                          • Hydration: Drink sufficient fluids throughout the trekking days, especially at higher altitude and on pass crossing days.

                                          • Weather Awareness: Weather can change quickly around Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La passes. Follow the instructions of your guide at all times, particularly regarding the timing of pass crossings.

                                          Packing Checklist

                                          • Essential Clothing: Comfortable layered clothing suitable for trekking, including a warm down jacket for cold mornings, evenings, and the pass crossings.

                                          • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support and grip suitable for multiple days of walking on varied and high altitude terrain, including glacier and rocky sections near the passes.

                                          Important Notices

                                          • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice issued by your home country. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                                          • Remote Terrain: Sections of this trek, particularly around the three passes, are more remote than the standard Everest Base Camp route, with fewer facilities such as shops, ATMs, and communication networks. Plan accordingly and carry sufficient cash for the trekking portion of your trip.

                                          • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs, ask permission before photographing monks and local families, and support the local economy of the Khumbu region during your trek.
