Trip Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is now a total 11 days trip including your arrival and departure. With easy road access to Chame to start the trek on day 2, and comfortable road from Muktinath to Pokhara after the trek, the main trekking days are limited to 6 days with a day of acclimatization at Manang, 3520m!

This 11-day Trek circles the Annapurna massif through the Marsyangdi valley, over Thorong La Pass, and down into the Kali Gandaki valley. This 11 day itinerary covers the main circuit, the core section of the route between Chame and Muktinath, with close views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Dhaulagiri along the way.

The trek reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass and includes 3 days above 4,000 m, so good physical fitness and some prior hiking experience are recommended. A dedicated acclimatization day at Manang helps your body adjust before the climb continues. This format suits trekkers with limited time who still want to complete the full crossing of Thorong La Pass and descend into the sacred town of Muktinath.

From Manang, the trail climbs through Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi (or an optional High Camp) before crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m and descending to the temple town of Muktinath. From Muktinath, you drive in a single day to Pokhara and from Pokhara back to Kathmandu.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Highlights

  • Kathmandu to Chame Drive: The trek begins with a long private drive from Kathmandu to Chame. The road follows the Prithvi Highway and then climbs into the Marsyangdi valley through Besisahar. As the road gains height, the scenery shifts from busy lowland towns to terraced hillsides and pine covered slopes, giving you your first sense of the mountains ahead before you take a single step on the trail.

  • Chame and the Marsyangdi Valley: Chame is the headquarters of Manang district and sits beside a natural hot spring. Soaking in the warm water after the long drive, with the sound of the Marsyangdi River nearby, is a relaxed way to settle into the mountains. From here, the valley narrows and the forest grows thicker with pine and fir as the trail heads deeper into the Annapurna region.

  • Upper Pisang and Annapurna II: The trail from Chame to Upper Pisang passes directly beneath the Paungda Danda, a massive curved wall of bare rock that rises straight up from the valley floor, one of the most striking natural sights on the whole circuit. This stretch also brings your first full view of Annapurna II, a huge snow covered peak that towers over the trail and stays in sight for much of the day.

  • Manang Acclimatization: Manang sits at 3,540 m, with Annapurna III and Gangapurna rising directly above the rooftops of the village. A full acclimatization day gives you time to properly take in these views, with a short walk to turquoise Gangapurna Lake or a nearby viewpoint offering some of the closest mountain scenery of the entire trek before you continue higher.

  • Yak Kharka and the High Alpine Zone: Past Manang, the trees disappear and the landscape opens into wide, rugged, high altitude terrain. The trail climbs steadily to Yak Kharka at 4,050 m, where herds of yaks graze on the hillsides and the mountain air feels noticeably thinner and quieter, a real sense of entering the high Himalaya.

  • Thorong Phedi and High Camp: Thorong Phedi sits at the base of Thorong La, surrounded by steep, bare slopes with the pass itself visible high above. Some trekkers continue further to High Camp at about 4,800 m, sleeping even closer to the mountains with sweeping views back down the valley, though the air here is noticeably colder and thinner.

  • Thorong La Pass: Crossing Thorong La at 5,416 m is the emotional high point of the trek. Reaching the top after a long, early morning climb, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags and a 360 degree view across the Annapurna and Mustang ranges, is a moment most trekkers remember long after the trip ends. The steep descent that follows drops you into a completely different, drier landscape on the other side.

  • Muktinath Temple: Muktinath is a peaceful and deeply spiritual place, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, with 108 stone water spouts and an eternal flame that has burned for centuries.

  • Kali Gandaki Valley by Road: The drive from Muktinath to Pokhara passes through Jomsom and the lower Mustang area, following the Kali Gandaki valley, one of the deepest river valleys in the world, before continuing down to the lakeside city of Pokhara.

Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal. Once you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal with our company name and logo board. They will take you to your hotel in Kathmandu, where you can check in and rest after your flight. The rest of the day is free for you to relax, walk around nearby, or simply recover from travel. In the evening, our guide will meet you for a short briefing about the trek ahead, followed by a welcome dinner where you can meet the rest of your group.

  • Route: Tribhuvan International Airport to Hotel in Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1,400 m

  • Accommodation: 3 star hotel

  • Meals: Welcome Dinner

  • Highlights: Arrival in Nepal, airport transfer, hotel check in, and trek briefing

Your journey begins early with a long private drive from Kathmandu all the way to Chame. The route follows the Prithvi Highway out of the city and then joins a mountain road that climbs up the Marsyangdi valley. Along the way, you pass through Besisahar, the main town of the Lamjung district, and continue further up the valley on a narrower, winding road as far as Chame. This is a full and demanding day of travel on mountain roads, so bring snacks, water, and something that keeps you comfortable, and allow extra time in case of road delays. Chame is the headquarters of the Manang district and has a natural hot spring beside the river, a welcome way to relax after the long drive.

    • Route: Kathmandu to Chame by private vehicle, via Besisahar

    • Altitude: 2,670 m

    • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

    • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

    • Highlights: Long drive along the Marsyangdi valley, passing through Besisahar, arrival in Chame, optional visit to the local hot spring

From Chame, the trail continues up the Marsyangdi valley and passes directly beneath the Paungda Danda, a massive curved wall of rock that rises steeply above the trail. It is one of the most dramatic natural features you will see on the trek. As the valley slowly opens up, you get your first clear view of Annapurna II, a huge peak that will stay in view for much of the day. Near Pisang, the trail splits into a lower route and an upper route. We follow the upper route to Upper Pisang, which takes a little more effort but rewards you with better mountain views and a quieter path.

      • Route: Chame to Upper Pisang via the upper trail

      • Altitude: 3,300 m

      • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

      • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

      • Highlights: Walking beneath the Paungda Danda rock face, first clear view of Annapurna II, arrival in Upper Pisang

Today continues along the higher and more scenic upper trail, passing through the villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal. These two villages sit right below Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, and the views from here are some of the closest and clearest on the whole circuit. After Ngawal, the trail drops down slightly before climbing again to reach Manang, the largest village in this part of the valley. Manang is an important stop on the trek, both for its size and for the acclimatization day you will spend here tomorrow.

        • Route: Upper Pisang to Manang via Ghyaru and Ngawal

        • Altitude: 3,540 m

        • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

        • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

        • Highlights: Close up views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna, walking through Ghyaru and Ngawal villages, arrival in Manang

Today is a full rest day in Manang, planned to help your body get used to the higher altitude before you continue toward Thorong La Pass. It is best not to spend the whole day resting in bed. Instead, a short, gentle walk to a nearby viewpoint or to Gangapurna Lake helps your body adjust faster than staying still all day. Many trekkers also visit Braga Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the region, or attend the free altitude sickness talk held in the village each afternoon. You will sleep in the same lodge again tonight.

          • Route: Acclimatization day around Manang

          • Altitude: 3,540 m

          • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

          • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

          • Highlights: Rest and acclimatization, optional walk to Gangapurna Lake, visit to Braga Monastery, altitude sickness talk in the village

After leaving Manang, the trail moves away from the larger villages and into quieter, higher ground. The path follows the Jarsang Khola valley, climbing steadily, and the trees slowly disappear as you gain height. The landscape becomes more open and rugged with each hour. You will reach Yak Kharka in the early afternoon, a small settlement named after the yak pastures found on the surrounding hillsides, where herds of yaks are often seen grazing nearby.

            • Route: Manang to Yak Kharka along the Jarsang Khola valley

            • Altitude: 4,050 m

            • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

            • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

            • Highlights: Entering the high alpine zone, views of grazing yaks, arrival in Yak Kharka

Today's walk is shorter than the day before, which gives your body extra time to adjust before the pass crossing. The trail climbs along a narrow path above the valley, with the surroundings becoming increasingly bare and rocky. Most groups stop at Thorong Phedi, the traditional last stop before Thorong La Pass, though some choose to push on further and spend the night at High Camp, which shortens the following day's climb slightly. Your guide will advise which option suits the group based on pace, weather, and how everyone is acclimatizing.

              • Route: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi, with an option to continue to High Camp

              • Altitude: 4,525 m at Thorong Phedi or 4,800 m at High Camp

              • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

              • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

              • Highlights: Reaching the base of Thorong La Pass, final preparation before the crossing

This is the longest and most demanding day of the entire trek, so you will start very early, often before sunrise, while the trail is still frozen and firm underfoot. The climb to Thorong La Pass is steady but tiring, reaching 5,416 m at its highest point, the highest altitude of the whole journey. The air feels noticeably thinner near the top, so a slow and steady pace is important. From the pass, prayer flags mark the highest point, and on a clear day you get wide views across the surrounding peaks. After a short rest, the trail drops steeply down the other side of the mountain, descending for several hours into the Kali Gandaki valley until you reach Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

                • Route: Thorong Phedi or High Camp to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass

                • Altitude: 5,416 m at the pass, descending to 3,760 m in Muktinath

                • Accommodation: Mountain lodge

                • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

                • Highlights: Crossing Thorong La Pass, the highest point of the trek, long descent into the Kali Gandaki valley, arrival at Muktinath

After breakfast, there is time to visit the Muktinath temple before you set off on a long day of driving. A private vehicle takes you down through the Kali Gandaki valley, passing through Jomsom, a windswept town known for its apple orchards and as a hub for flights in and out of the region. The road continues alongside the Kali Gandaki River through one of the deepest river valleys in the world, with dry hillsides on either side, before eventually reaching lower, greener terrain and continuing on to Pokhara beside Phewa Lake. This is a long and full day on the road, so it is worth resting when you can along the way.

                  • Route: Muktinath to Pokhara via Jomsom by private vehicle

                  • Altitude: 822 m

                  • Accommodation: 3 star hotel

                  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch

                  • Highlights: Morning visit to Muktinath temple, drive through Jomsom, journey along the Kali Gandaki gorge, arrival in Pokhara

A private vehicle takes you from Pokhara back to Kathmandu, following the Prithvi Highway and running alongside the Trishuli River for much of the journey. Once you arrive in Kathmandu, the rest of the day is completely free, giving you time to rest properly, take a long shower, or explore parts of the city if you still have the energy. In the evening, the whole group will gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate finishing the trek together.

                    • Route: Pokhara to Kathmandu by private vehicle

                    • Altitude: 1,400 m

                    • Highlights: Scenic drive along the Trishuli River, free time in Kathmandu, farewell dinner with the group

On your final day, after breakfast at the hotel, our representative will take you to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time for your international flight home. This brings your Annapurna Circuit Trek to an end.

                      • Route: Hotel in Kathmandu to Tribhuvan International Airport

                        Trip Information

                        Know Before You Book

                        • Visa Requirements: All citizens of the world except Indian passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and most travellers can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. For this 11 day trip, a 15 day tourist visa is sufficient and costs USD 30. You can apply and pay online in advance at https://nepaliport-new.immigration.gov.np/

                        • Passport Validity: Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

                        • Fitness Level: This trek reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass and spends several days above 4,000 m. Because it is a shorter, faster version of the classic circuit with less time spent gradually gaining altitude at lower elevation, trekkers should have a good level of fitness, and some prior hiking or trekking experience along with regular walking practice beforehand is strongly recommended.

                        • Road Conditions: The long drive between Kathmandu and Chame, and the drive between Muktinath and Pokhara, follow mountain roads that can be affected by weather or seasonal landslides, occasionally requiring extra travel time.

                        • Group and Guide Requirements: Trekkers in the Annapurna region are required to trek with a licensed guide and hold a valid Trekkers Information Management System card and Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit.

                        • Travel Insurance: Travel insurance covering medical emergencies, high altitude evacuation, and trip delays is strongly recommended for this trek.

                        • Currency and Payment Methods: We accept payments in major currencies such as USD, EUR, and GBP, though it is a good idea to carry some Nepali Rupees for smaller personal expenses on the trail.

                        Accommodations, Meals and Transportation

                        • Typical Accommodation Used: You will stay in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara before and after the trek. During the trek, you will stay in mountain lodges and teahouses along the route, which offer simple rooms and dining halls where meals are served.

                        • Meals: Breakfast is included in Kathmandu and Pokhara, along with a welcome dinner on Day 1 and a farewell dinner on Day 10. During the trek, full board meals of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included at every stop from Chame through Muktinath.

                        • Guide Support: An experienced English speaking guide accompanies you throughout the trek, assisting with permits, acclimatization, and trail navigation, including the crossing of Thorong La Pass. Porters are also provided to carry your duffle bag.

                        • Transportation: This package includes private airport transfers in Kathmandu, a private drive between Kathmandu and Chame, a private drive from Muktinath to Pokhara, and a private drive between Pokhara and Kathmandu. All movement between villages on the trekking portion is done on foot.

                        Seasonal and Weather Updates

                        • Autumn (September to November): This is a popular season for the Annapurna Circuit, with generally stable weather and clear mountain views, though nights at higher altitude and around the pass are very cold.

                        • Spring (March to May): Spring offers milder temperatures at lower elevation, with generally good conditions for the pass crossing later in the season.

                        Health and Safety

                        • General Wellbeing: This trek spends several days above 4,000 m and crosses a pass above 5,400 m. Trekkers should be aware of the signs of altitude sickness and communicate any symptoms to their guide promptly.

                        • Healthcare Facilities: Basic health posts are available in larger villages such as Manang, and full hospital facilities are available in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Your guide can assist with local arrangements if required.

                        • Pacing: Walking at a comfortable pace and following the built in acclimatization day at Manang can help your body adjust before the pass crossing. Since this itinerary skips the lower valley walking days of the standard circuit, following your guide's advice on pacing between Chame and Manang is especially important.

                        • Hydration: Drink sufficient fluids throughout the trekking days, especially at higher altitude and on the pass crossing day.

                        • Weather Awareness: Weather can change quickly around Thorong La Pass. Follow the instructions of your guide at all times, particularly regarding the timing of the pass crossing.

                        Packing Checklist

                        • Essential Clothing: Comfortable layered clothing suitable for trekking, including a warm down jacket for cold mornings, evenings, and the pass crossing.

                        • Footwear: Sturdy trekking boots with good ankle support and grip suitable for multiple days of walking on varied and high altitude terrain, including rocky sections near the pass.

                        • Trail Gear: A sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket for changing weather, along with the trekking poles provided as part of your package.

                        • Personal Items: A small daypack, reusable water bottle, personal toiletries, camera, and any personal medications you need, along with the duffle bag and sleeping bag provided as part of your package.

                        Important Notices

                        • Travel Advisories: Before you travel, we recommend checking the latest travel advice issued by your home country. Our team is happy to provide local updates before your trip.

                        • Remote Terrain: Sections of this trek, particularly around Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi or High Camp, and the pass crossing, are more remote, with fewer facilities such as shops, ATMs, and communication networks. Plan accordingly and carry sufficient cash for the trekking portion of your trip.

                        • Responsible Travel: We encourage you to respect local customs, ask permission before photographing monks and local families, and support the local economy of the Annapurna region during your trek.

                        Trip Preparations
                        • What is the highest point of this Annapurna Main Circuit Trek?

The highest point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m, reached on Day 8 of this itinerary.

                        • Driving directly from Kathmandu to Chame lets the trek begin at a higher point on the circuit, saving several days of walking through the lower Marsyangdi valley while still covering the most scenic section of the route through Upper Pisang, Manang, and Thorong La Pass.

                        • No. This 11 day version returns from Muktinath directly to Pokhara by road, so it does not include the western loop through Tatopani, Ghorepani, and Poon Hill found in 15 Days Annapurna Circuit itineraries.

                        • Yes. This itinerary includes a full acclimatization day in Manang on Day 5, along with a gradual altitude gain from Chame through Yak Kharka before the pass crossing. Trekkers should still be in good physical condition, since this route reaches altitude faster than the longer 15 day itinerary.

                        • Thorong Phedi is the traditional overnight stop before the pass, while High Camp sits higher up and slightly shortens the climb on pass crossing day. Your guide will recommend which option suits the group based on pace and acclimatization.

                        • Yes. After crossing Thorong La Pass on Day 8, the trail descends directly to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists known for its 108 water spouts and eternal flame.

                        • On Day 9, a private vehicle drives you from Muktinath to Pokhara in a single day, passing through Jomsom and the Kali Gandaki Gorge. This is a long day on the road, so it is worth resting when possible along the way.
