Itinerary Overview

This 5 day trek follows the Helambu route from Sundarijal to Sermanthang. You start with a one hour drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, then walk through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Chisapani. From there the trail passes Pati Bhanjyang and Gul Bhanjyang to Khutumsang, then climbs past Yurin Danda and Magen Goth to Tharepati, the highest point of the trek. You then walk down through Melamchi Village to Tarke Ghangyul, which has one of the oldest monasteries in the area. On the last day you walk to Sermanthang and return to Kathmandu by road via Melamchi Bazar.

Itinerary

After an early breakfast in Kathmandu, you take a drive of about one hour to Sundarijal, where the trek begins. From here you walk into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and climb through the forest to Mulkharka, a Tamang village. This is a good place to stop for a snack and a cup of tea. After the break, the trail follows the ridge and enters thick forest of rhododendron and oak. In spring, the forest is full of colorful rhododendron flowers. You keep walking through the forest until you reach Chisapani, where you stay for the night. It is a long first day, so walk at a steady pace and rest when you need to.

    You wake up early and head to the Chisapani viewpoint to watch the sunrise. On a clear morning, you can see the first light falling across the Himalayan range, creating a view you will remember. After breakfast, you begin your trek. The trail passes through beautiful meadows and farmland, offering scenic views of the Langtang mountains.

    You then descend to Pati Bhanjyang, a small and picturesque settlement. From here, the trail climbs uphill to a pass before continuing toward Gul Bhanjyang. Another descent from the pass brings you to Khutumsang, where you stay overnight.

      After breakfast, you walk north with views of snow covered mountains ahead of you. The trail is steep in places and goes through forest of fir and rhododendron. There are no permanent settlements in this area, so the trail feels quiet and wild. Rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal, and you will see many of these trees along the way. The trail then reaches Yurin Danda, where you get wide views of the Himalayas. Further on, you come to Magen Goth, where a few lodges stand near a meadow with mountain views. You continue from here to Tharepati, the highest point of the trek. Nights at Tharepati can be cold, so keep your warm clothes ready.

        Today you see more of the local villages and the way people live in this region. From Tharepati, you first walk east away from the ridgeline and then turn south to Melamchi Village. The village has many Buddhist stupas, shrines, and monasteries, and it is said that Guru Rinpoche visited several of these holy places. The trail then passes through a few more villages, with views of the Himalayan ranges along the way. You then climb to Tarke Ghangyul, where you stay for the night. In the village, you can visit one of the largest and oldest monasteries in the area. Most of the people living here belong to the Hyolmo community.

          The last day is a pleasant walk because the trail does not climb high. From Tarke Ghangyul, you walk through a thick forest, past streams and waterfalls. You pass through several small villages between Parachin and the Gangyul Sherpa settlement. From Gangyul, you walk on to Sermanthang, a lovely village with several Buddhist monasteries. Your trek ends here. A vehicle takes you from Sermanthang to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazar. For part of the drive, the road follows the Melamchi River, and you get good views of the countryside and farm fields. The drive takes about 4 hours.

Since this trip runs for 5 days, a 15 day tourist visa generally gives you a comfortable buffer around your travel dates. The 15 day tourist visa fee is USD 30.             • Passport Validity: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page for your visa stamp.

            • Fitness Level: This trek has 4 days of walking, with some long days, especially Day 2 and Day 4. Good general fitness is recommended. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not required.

            • Permits: The trek passes through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and the Langtang National Park area, and each requires an entry permit. The Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park entry permit costs NPR 1,000 per foreign national, and the Langtang National Park entry permit costs NPR 3,000 per foreign national. Both permits are included in your trek package and arranged by our company.

            • Road Conditions: The trip includes a one hour drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal on Day 1 and a drive of about 4 hours from Sermanthang to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazar on Day 5. Part of the return drive follows the Melamchi River. Hill roads can be affected by weather, so travel time can vary.
