Itinerary

Your 16-day classic Nepal tour starts the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, where a Thamel Travel and Tours representative will be waiting to take you to your hotel. Your arrival day is free, giving you time to rest before the trip begins.  You can take the rest of the day to recover from your journey, but if you feel like going out in the evening, you can take a short walk around Thamel and get your first glimpse of the city's lively streets.

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu (3-star or upgrade available)
  • Travel Distance: Airport to hotel: approx. 6 km, 20-40 minutes depending on traffic
  • Walking Distance: None scheduled
  • Meals Included: Welcome dinner

Day 2 of the trip is dedicated to sightseeing Kathmandu's most important heritage sites, all included in the seven monument zones that make up the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have a private vehicle and guide moving between stops, with enough time at each to actually look around rather than rush through. It's a full day, mixing temples, stupas, and the old royal squares that once served as the seats of three separate kingdoms.

    Pashupatinath Temple

Pashupatinath Temple is one of Nepal's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, the temple complex is known for its historic architecture and riverside ghats, where traditional Hindu cremation ceremonies are performed.

    Boudhanath Stupa

Boudhanath is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and an important religious site in Nepal. It is a major center for Tibetan Buddhism and is surrounded by monasteries, prayer wheels, and traditional shops. We will be walking around the stupa, observing local religious practices, and experiencing the peaceful atmosphere of this historic site.

    Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)

Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, is one of the oldest religious sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Located on a hilltop, we can see the panoramic views of Kathmandu, which is an important place of worship for both Buddhists and Hindus. The complex features a historic stupa, temples, prayer wheels, and shrines, making it one of the valley's most significant cultural landmarks.

    Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a historic palace complex and one of the city's most important cultural landmarks. It is home to centuries-old temples, courtyards, and traditional Newari architecture. The square also includes Kumari Ghar, the residence of Nepal's Living Goddess, known as the Kumari. Visitors can explore the area's rich history while seeing many of Kathmandu's best-known historic monuments.

After a full day of exploring Kathmandu's heritage sites,  our guide will make sure you return to your hotel safely and enjoy a relaxing evening.

    • Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
    • Travel Distance: Approx. 25-30 km covered across all sites within the valley
    • Walking Distance: Moderate — includes stairs at Swayambhunath and walking within temple complexes
    • Meals Included: Breakfast

Today's journey takes you from Kathmandu to Namobuddha, with a visit to the historic town of Panauti along the way. The drive passes through rural villages, farmland, and hillside landscapes, offering a different side of Nepal before reaching the peaceful hilltop monastery.

      Panauti

Your first stop is Panauti, a historic Newari town known for its well-preserved streets, traditional houses, and temples. As you walk through the old town, you'll get a closer look at local architecture and everyday life. You'll also visit Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, one of the oldest temples in Nepal.

      Namobuddha

From Panauti, continue to Namobuddha, one of Nepal's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. You will visit the main stupa and Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, where you can observe the peaceful monastery surroundings and, if you're fortunate, see monks during their daily prayers. The hilltop location also offers pleasant views of the surrounding countryside.

      • Accommodation: Guesthouse or lodge in Namobuddha
      • Travel Distance: Kathmandu to Panauti: approx. 32 km (1.5 hrs); Panauti to Namobuddha: approx. 10 km (30 min)
      • Walking Distance: Light walking around Panauti town and the Namobuddha monastery complex
      • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4 starts with a chance to properly explore Namobuddha's monasteries and enjoy the hillside views before the drive to Bhaktapur. With more time this morning, it is worth visiting the main monastery hall if prayers or a puja ceremony happen to be underway; visitors are usually welcome to sit quietly at the back. By afternoon, you will arrive in Bhaktapur, one of the best-preserved historic cities in Nepal.

        Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Bhaktapur was once an independent kingdom in its own right, and its Durbar Square reflects that history with some of the finest Newari architecture in the country. The 55-Window Palace, the Nyatapola Temple, a five-story pagoda that survived the 2015 earthquake largely intact, and the Golden Gate are the main/famous landmarks. Bhaktapur has managed traffic restrictions and pedestrian-only zones that Kathmandu has not, so the old town will feel calmer and more intact. You can also find Pottery Square, where potters still shape clay on traditional wheels in the open air, is a short walk from the main square and worth the detour.

        • Accommodation: Hotel in Bhaktapur
        • Travel Distance: Namobuddha to Bhaktapur: approx. 27 km, 1.5 hours
        • Walking Distance: Moderate walking through Bhaktapur's car-free old town
        • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Today's drive takes you north out of the valley toward Nuwakot/Nuwakot Durbar (Seven-Story Palace), a district that played a pivotal role in Nepal's unification. It offers a quieter experience but attracts far fewer visitors than the Kathmandu Valley towns. The roads there get quieter and the landscape more rural as you climb, with the Trishuli River running below for part of the route.

          Nuwakot Durbar (Seven-Story Palace)

Nuwakot was the strategic base King Prithvi Narayan Shah used in his 18th-century campaign to unify the separate kingdoms of Nepal into one country, and the hilltop palace complex here, including the striking seven-story Nuwakot Durbar, dates from that period. The 2015 earthquake caused significant damage, and restoration work has been ongoing, but the site remains open and gives real insight into Nepal's political history. The area offers views over the Trishuli Valley, traditional red-brick architecture, and a quieter atmosphere than the Kathmandu Valley.

          • Accommodation: Heritage guesthouse or lodge in Nuwakot
          • Travel Distance: Bhaktapur to Nuwakot: approx. 75 km, 3-4 hours
          • Walking Distance: Light to moderate, including some uphill walking to the palace complex
          • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

From Nuwakot, the drive continues west toward Gorkha, the hill town that gave its name to the Gorkha Kingdom and, eventually, to the Gurkha soldiers known worldwide for their military reputation. This day is a bit of a longer travel, but the destination is one of the more historically significant stops on the whole trip.

            Gorkha Durbar & Gorkha Bazaar

Gorkha Durbar sits on a hill above the town and is reached by climbing a long flight of stone steps. It was the home of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who began the campaign to unify Nepal in the 18th century. The complex includes the historic palace, Gorakhnath Cave, and Kalika Temple. From the top, you can enjoy views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, distant Himalayan peaks. After your visit, take a short walk through Gorkha Bazaar, where traditional buildings, local shops, and tea houses offer a glimpse of everyday life in this historic hill town.

            • Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse in Gorkha
            • Travel Distance: Nuwakot to Gorkha: approx. 110 km, 4-5 hours
            • Walking Distance: Moderate to strenuous — stone stairway climb to Gorkha Durbar
            • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today includes two very different destinations: Bandipur, a historic hilltop town known for its well-preserved heritage, and Sarangkot, a viewpoint above Pokhara known for its mountain panorama. It is a full driving day with a good break in the middle.

              Bandipur & Sarangkot

Bandipur is a historic hilltop town known for its traditional Newari buildings, stone-paved streets, and mountain views. A walk through its main street offers a chance to experience its preserved heritage and local atmosphere. Sarangkot, located above Pokhara, is a popular viewpoint with wide views of the surrounding hills and the Himalayan range. It is also one of the best places to watch the sunrise over the mountains.

              • Accommodation: Guesthouse or lodge in Sarangkot
              • Travel Distance: Gorkha to Bandipur: approx. 55 km (2 hrs); Bandipur to Sarangkot: approx. 75 km (2.5 hrs)
              • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

An early start today for sunrise at Sarangkot, then a drive to the trailhead and the first proper walking day of the trip, heading up toward Ghorepani. This is where the itinerary shifts from sightseeing into trekking, so the pace slows down and the effort level goes up.

                Trek to Ghorepani

From the trailhead near Nayapul, the walk to Ghorepani follows the well-established Poon Hill trekking route, passing through Gurung and Magar villages, terraced fields, and increasingly dense rhododendron forest as you gain altitude. It's a proper trekking day — expect stone stairways, river crossings on suspension bridges, and a steady climb — but the trail is well-maintained, and teahouses appear at regular intervals for tea breaks. Ghorepani itself is a small settlement that exists almost entirely to serve trekkers heading up to Poon Hill, with a cluster of lodges offering hot meals and mountain views right from the dining room.

                • Accommodation: Teahouse lodge in Ghorepani
                • Travel Distance: Sarangkot to trailhead: approx. 45 km, 1.5 hours by road
                • Walking Distance: Trekking day: approx. 5-6 hours, moderate to strenuous, mostly uphill
                • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day begins before sunrise with a hike to Poon Hill, one of Nepal's most popular viewpoints. After watching the sunrise over the Himalayas, you'll return to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing by road to Jomsom. As the journey moves north, the landscape gradually changes from green hills to the dry valleys of the Mustang region.

                  Poon Hill

At 3,210 meters, Poon Hill is one of Nepal's best-known viewpoints. On a clear morning, it offers wide views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including peaks such as Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. The hike from Ghorepani takes about 45 minutes to one hour, making it a rewarding morning walk before breakfast.

                  Jomsom

The drive to Jomsom follows the Kali Gandaki Valley, with mountain scenery changing steadily along the way. Green hills gradually give way to the dry landscapes of the Mustang region. Jomsom is the main town of Lower Mustang and serves as an important gateway for travelers visiting Muktinath and Upper Mustang.

                  • Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Jomsom
                  • Travel Distance: Ghorepani to trailhead: approx. 1.5 hrs walking; road drive to Jomsom: approx. 75 km, 3-4 hours
                  • Walking Distance: Poon Hill climb: 1-1.5 hours; descent to Ghorepani: 1 hour
                  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today's excursion takes you to two of the most important places in the Mustang region. Visit Muktinath Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, before continuing to Kagbeni, a historic village at the gateway to Upper Mustang.

                    Muktinath Temple

Located at 3,800 meters, Muktinath Temple is one of Nepal's most important religious sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple is known for its 108 water spouts, sacred shrines, and the natural flame that has burned here for many years. Surrounded by the dry mountain landscape of Mustang, the site offers both cultural and spiritual significance.

                    Kagbeni

Kagbeni is a historic village where the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers meet. Known as the gateway to Upper Mustang, it features narrow lanes, traditional mud-brick houses, a centuries-old monastery, and Tibetan-style architecture. A walk through the village provides a glimpse into the region's history, culture, and daily life.

                    • Accommodation: Hotel or lodge in Jomsom
                    • Travel Distance: Jomsom to Muktinath: approx. 18 km (45 min by jeep); Jomsom to Kagbeni: approx. 10 km (30 min)
                    • Walking Distance: Moderate walking within Muktinath temple grounds and Kagbeni village
                    • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today you will travel back to Pokhara from Jomsom, either by flight or by road, depending on the weather and your travel plan. As you leave the Mustang region behind, the dry mountain landscape gradually changes to the green hills around Pokhara.

                      Jomsom to Pokhara Transfer

The flight from Jomsom to Pokhara takes about 20 minutes and offers views of the surrounding mountains. If travelling by road, the journey follows the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing through small towns and changing landscapes before reaching Pokhara. Both options provide a different perspective of the region and bring you back to one of Nepal's most popular lakeside cities.

                      • Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara
                      • Travel Distance: Jomsom to Pokhara: approx. 20 min by air, or 6-7 hours by road
                      • Walking Distance: None scheduled
                      • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

On day 12 of the trip, you will be spending the whole day exploring Pokhara, a city known for its lakes, caves, and mountain views. Compared to Kathmandu, Pokhara has a quieter atmosphere and is centered around Phewa Lake, making it one of Nepal's most popular destinations.

                        Phewa Lake
It is Pokhara's largest and most popular lake. Here, you will enjoy a boat ride and visit Tal Barahi Temple, located on a small island. The nearby Lakeside area is known for its cafés, restaurants, and local shops.

                        Davis Falls & Gupteshwor Cave
After the Phewa Lake, you will be Visiting Devi's Fall, where the Pardi Khola River flows into an underground tunnel. Also, you will be exploring the famous Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, a limestone cave with a Shiva shrine and views of the underground waterfall.

                        World Peace Pagoda
It is located on a hill above Phewa Lake. World Peace Pagoda offers panoramic views of Pokhara, the lake, and the Annapurna range. It is also one of the city's most popular viewpoints and a peaceful place to visit.

                        • Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara
                        • Travel Distance: All sites within Pokhara valley, approx. 15-20 km total
                        • Walking Distance: Moderate — includes uphill sections to the World Peace Pagoda
                        • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

From the mountains, today's drive takes you down into the Terai lowlands and Chitwan National Park, a complete shift in scenery, climate, and pace. You can expect warmer temperatures, denser forests, and a very different set of activities once you arrive. The road from Pokhara to Chitwan descends steadily out of the hill country and into the flat, subtropical Terai belt near the Indian border.

                          • Accommodation: Jungle lodge or resort in Chitwan
                          • Travel Distance: Pokhara to Chitwan: approx. 145 km, 4-5 hours
                          • Walking Distance: None scheduled
                          • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On this day, you will have A full day built around Chitwan's wildlife and the culture of the local Tharu community, who have lived on the edge of this forest for generations. Activities are typically arranged through your lodge and may be adjusted slightly depending on the season and park conditions.

                            Jungle Safari (Jeep or Canoe)

Safaris in Chitwan run either by open jeep or by dugout canoe along the Rapti River, and both offer a decent chance of spotting one-horned rhinos, along with deer, wild boar, gharial and mugger crocodiles, and a wide range of birdlife. The park is home to over 500 recorded bird species. Sightings aren't guaranteed, since this is a wild forest and not a zoo, but rhino encounters are fairly common given the park's healthy population.

Tharu Cultural Village & Stick Dance

The Tharu are the indigenous people of the Terai lowlands, with a distinct language, architecture, and set of customs shaped by centuries of living alongside the forest. A visit to a nearby Tharu village gives some insight into mud-and-thatch house construction and daily farming life, and many lodges arrange an evening stick dance performance — a rhythmic, energetic dance performed with wooden sticks that is part of Tharu culture for generations.

                            • Accommodation: Jungle lodge or resort in Chitwan
                            • Travel Distance: Activities within Chitwan National Park and surrounding villages
                            • Walking Distance: Light to moderate, depending on chosen activities
                            • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 15, we consider it as the last full travel day of the trip, heading back to Kathmandu either by road or by a short domestic flight. It is a good day to relax, reflect on the trip, and pick up any last souvenirs once you are back in the city. The drive back to Kathmandu follows the Prithvi Highway, retracing part of the route from earlier in the trip, and typically takes five to six hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. A domestic flight from Bharatpur is also an option if you'd rather skip the road time.

                              • Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
                              • Travel Distance: Chitwan to Kathmandu: approx. 160 km, 5-6 hours by road, or 25 min by air

                              • Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

The trip wraps up today with a transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport in time for your onward flight. A Thamel Travel and Tours representative will see you off at the hotel and manage the transfer to the airport, timed according to your flight schedule. This marks the end of your 16-day journey through Nepal's heritage towns, mountain trails, and lowland jungle.

                                  Before You Travel
This itinerary is intended to give you a clear picture of your journey through Nepal. Distances, travel times, accommodation, meals, and daily activities are included to help you prepare before arrival. While minor adjustments may be necessary due to weather, road conditions, or local events, the overall experience remains the same.

                                  Trip Preparations
                                  • Is 16 days enough to explore Nepal?

Sixteen days is enough to get a solid overview of Kathmandu Valley heritage sites, a Himalayan trekking stretch, Pokhara, and a Chitwan jungle safari — without feeling rushed. You won't see everything Nepal offers (it's a big, varied country), but this itinerary balances culture, mountains, and wildlife well within that time frame, with a reasonable pace between destinations.

                                  • Yes, this is a good introductory itinerary for first-time visitors to Nepal. It covers the major cultural sites, includes a manageable trekking section rather than a full high-altitude expedition, and stays mostly in comfortable accommodation. A guide and driver handle logistics throughout, so you don't need prior experience traveling in Nepal or South Asia.

                                  • The Poon Hill hike involves two to three days of walking, mostly on stone stairways, gaining altitude gradually up to around 3,200 meters. It's considered moderate rather than extreme; no technical climbing is involved, but a reasonable fitness level and some prior walking or stair-climbing preparation make the days more comfortable, especially the steep sections near Ghorepani.

                                  • Yes. Muktinath is reached by road or jeep from Jomsom rather than on foot, so no trekking fitness is required to get there. The site itself sits at nearly 3,800 meters, so mild altitude effects like shortness of breath are possible, but the visit itself involves walking around the temple grounds rather than any demanding physical activity.

                                  • This itinerary can work for families with older children and for senior travelers in reasonably good health, though the stairways at Swayambhunath, Gorkha Durbar, and throughout the Ghorepani trekking section are worth considering. Thamel Travel and Tours can adjust the pace or swap the trekking portion for additional sightseeing days if that suits your group better.

                                  • Spring (March-May) and autumn (late September-November) are the best seasons, offering clear mountain views and stable trekking weather. Winter is cold at altitude but generally dry. The monsoon months (June-August) bring rain, reduced visibility, and a higher risk of flight delays on the Jomsom-Pokhara route, so most travelers plan around that window.

                                  • Accommodation varies by location: 3-star hotels in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Pokhara, heritage guesthouses in Nuwakot and Gorkha, basic teahouse lodges in Ghorepani and Jomsom, and a jungle lodge in Chitwan. Rooms in the teahouse sections are simple, often with shared bathrooms, which is standard for this part of the trekking route.

                                  • Yes. Thamel Travel and Tours can adjust the number of days in any location, add optional activities like paragliding in Pokhara, upgrade hotel categories, or extend the Chitwan stay. It's best to raise any changes before booking so the itinerary and permits can be arranged accordingly.

                                  • Pack in layers to handle the range of climates on this trip — light clothing for Kathmandu and Chitwan, warm layers for Ghorepani and Muktinath, and rain protection outside the dry season. See the full Packing List and Special Packing List for Women sections above for a detailed breakdown.

                                  • The main permit needed is the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit), which covers both the Ghorepani-Poon Hill trail and the Muktinath area, and it's arranged by Thamel Travel and Tours as part of this package. As of 2026, the TIMS card is no longer checked on Annapurna region trails, though a licensed guide is a mandatory requirement, which this itinerary already includes.
